About Madonnina del Mare

Every last Sunday of May, Peschici celebrates the Madonnina del Mare, a festival that local fishermen consider the true start of summer. The statue travels in a procession from the historic center to the harbor, where it is then taken out to sea on a flotilla of colorful boats, sailing along the bays of the Gargano coastline as far as Sfinale. Upon returning to the pier, the event concludes with a spectacular fireworks display over the water and the distribution of traditional hot fritters. An intense and evocative popular ritual that lies at the heart of this Apulian village's maritime identity.

The Peschici fishermen's festival

The Madonnina del Mare Celebrations are one of the most deeply felt and iconic events in Peschici, an enchanting village perched on the Gargano coast in the province of Foggia, in the heart of Apulia. Every year, on the last Sunday of May (weather permitting), the maritime community gathers around the small statue of the Madonna to celebrate what is traditionally considered the start of summer and, even more importantly, the fishermen's festival.

The sea procession

The day begins with a colorful procession that winds its way from the Church of Sant'Elia Profeta through the historic center down to the harbor. Following Holy Mass, the most moving moment takes place: the statue of the Madonnina is brought aboard a vessel, and the sea procession begins. A true flotilla—formed by traditional fishing boats, ships, dinghies, and vessels from the Peschici fleet—accompanies the Madonna along the bays and beaches of the coastline, reaching the stunning Baia di Sfinale before returning to the port of departure.

Fireworks over the sea and fritters

As the procession returns, the spectacle lights up on the pier with fireworks over the sea, illuminating the harbor waters and providing a captivating finale. The festival concludes in a spirit of conviviality with the distribution of traditional hot fritters offered to all attendees, a sweet and popular symbol of this celebration.

A maritime tradition

Devotion to the Madonnina del Mare is deeply rooted in Peschici's culture, which has always been tied to fishing and a profound relationship with the sea. For the community of this Gargano village, this occasion represents a moment of faith, as well as gratitude and a request for protection for those who earn their living on the water. The festival symbolically marks the opening of the summer season and attracts residents, returning emigrants, and the first tourists to one of the most beautiful landscapes in Apulia.

Peschici and the Gargano

Included in the Municipality of Peschici's calendar of events, the festival is the ideal opportunity to discover the white-washed village overlooking the Adriatic, its trabucchi (traditional fishing platforms), the narrow alleys of the historic center, and the beaches of the Gargano National Park. An authentic event that blends spirituality, tradition, and scenery.
