The April 13th celebration commemorating the miracle of 365 AD at Santa Maria di Leuca
Every year, at the beginning of spring, Santa Maria di Leuca โ a village in the municipality of Castrignano del Capo, in the province of Lecce โ celebrates its most ancient and intimate festival: the April 13th event, dedicated to the Madonna di Leuca, the Madonna de Finibus Terrae venerated in the basilica that stands at the extreme tip of Salento, where the Ionian Sea meets the Adriatic.
Unlike the grand celebrations in mid-August, which feature a spectacular sea procession, this spring recurrence is strictly religious and devotional. It is the day that recalls the very origin of the Leuca cult and draws numerous pilgrims from all over lower Salento to the Sanctuary.
The festival is rooted in a local tradition. It is said that in 365 AD, a devastating tsunami threatened the Cape of Leuca: the terrified inhabitants insistently invoked the Virgin's intervention to save them from the impending catastrophe. According to the story, the Madonna took pity on their pleas and calmed the waters, sparing both people and property. From that moment on, every April 13th, inhabitants of neighboring towns undertook pilgrimages on foot to Leuca to thank the Madonna for the protection received.
The day of April 13th is marked by Eucharistic celebrations in the Basilica Sanctuary of Santa Maria De Finibus Terrae, scheduled throughout the day to welcome the many pilgrims who ascend to the Cape. Devotion to the Madonna di Leuca has spanned centuries: tradition recalls illustrious pilgrims such as Saint Francis of Assisi, returning from the East, and King Alfonso of Aragon of Naples.
It is important not to confuse this recurrence with the great patronal festival of August 13-15, when the statue of the Madonna is carried in procession to the harbor and placed on a fishing boat, accompanied by dozens of decorated vessels between Punta Ristola and Punta Meliso, ending with fireworks at sea. The spring festival is more intimate, tied to the memory of the miracle and the tradition of pilgrimage.
Situated on the promontory of Punta Meliso, Santa Maria di Leuca is considered the southernmost point of the Salento region of Puglia, the finis terrae from which the basilica takes its name. The Sanctuary, built according to tradition on an ancient pagan temple, has always been a destination for pilgrims traveling the so-called "Leuca routes." The April 13th festival is an opportunity to rediscover this place of faith and landscape, among the columns of the sanctuary, the monumental staircase, and the horizon of the two seas.
On Monday, April 13, 2026, Santa Maria di Leuca renewed its spring festival in honor of the Madonna de Finibus Terrae, on the day commemorating the miracle of April 13, 365. The celebrations took place in the Basilica Sanctuary of Santa Maria De Finibus Terrae, with Holy Masses held throughout the day to welcome pilgrims who ascended to the Cape of Leuca. The event, devotional in nature, maintained the tradition of pilgrimage to the sanctuary at the edge of Salento, distinct from the major patronal festivities in August.
A day of religious celebrations in the Basilica Sanctuary of Santa Maria De Finibus Terrae: Holy Masses distributed throughout the day and pilgrimages to the Sanctuary. The detailed program with celebration times is published by the Basilica of Leuca.
