The seaside festival of Torre Vado

The Blessed Virgin Mary Stella Maris Festival is the most important traditional event of the year for Torre Vado, a lively seaside resort belonging to the municipality of Morciano di Leuca, in lower Salento, in the province of Lecce. Every August 11th, this small coastal village, a popular summer destination for its beaches on the Ionian Sea, unites in devotion to the Madonna of the Sea, the protector of those who live by fishing and navigation.

The sea procession

The most moving moment of the festival is the sea procession. The statue of the Virgin is carried aboard one of the local fishing paranze (boats), moored at the nearby harbor and decorated for the occasion. The Madonna's boat, followed by a procession of other vessels, local authorities, and a marching band, travels along the coastline from the beaches of Pescoluse to San Gregorio, in a ritual that blends faith, maritime tradition, and community identity. Upon returning, the celebration continues with Holy Mass.

Fried fish festival, pizzica, and fireworks

After the religious observances, the festival transforms into a grand popular celebration along the promenade. The undisputed star is the fried fish festival, featuring fresh catch served in the traditional way, accompanied by local wine. The rhythmic sounds of Salento pizzica enliven the squares and the harbor area, while the fireworks display over the sea provides the most anticipated finale, with colorful reflections dancing on the water.

A community tradition

The event is organized by the Religious Festival Committee of Morciano di Leuca - Torre Vado, which coordinates the celebration each year and manages the program, available in the days leading up to the event at the local Tourist Information Office. The festival attracts not only residents and regular visitors to Salento but also numerous tourists spending their summer holidays in Torre Vado, helping to keep one of the most authentic maritime traditions of the Ionian coast alive.

Torre Vado owes its name to the ancient coastal watchtower and is located just a few kilometers from Santa Maria di Leuca, the extreme tip of Italy's heel where the Ionian and Adriatic seas meet.
