About Madonna di Leuca Festival

Every year from August 13th to 15th, Santa Maria di Leuca (a district of Castrignano del Capo, in the province of Lecce) hosts the Solemn Celebrations in honor of the Madonna de Finibus Terrae. It is the most anticipated event of the Salento summer: the evocative 'intorciata' torchlight procession on August 14th, the solemn sea procession on Ferragosto with the statue of the Madonna carried by boat followed by dozens of decorated vessels, and the grand midnight fireworks display over the harbor.

The most anticipated festival of the Salento summer

The Solemn Celebrations in honor of the Madonna di Leuca are the most heartfelt and well-attended event of the year in Santa Maria di Leuca, the seaside district of Castrignano del Capo, located at the southern tip of Salento in the province of Lecce (Apulia). Celebrated annually around August 15th, the Feast of the Assumption, the festival draws thousands of faithful, pilgrims, and tourists to the point where the land ends and the two seas, the Adriatic and the Ionian, meet: the de Finibus Terrae, the end of the earth.

The Madonna de Finibus Terrae

At the heart of the celebrations is the Basilica Sanctuary of Santa Maria de Finibus Terrae, which overlooks the promontory of Capo di Leuca and has guided Mediterranean sailors for centuries. Devotion to the Madonna di Leuca is rooted in an ancient tradition linked to the sea and fishermen, and still today unites the entire Salento community in three days of religious rites, music, and performances.

The three days of festivities

The celebrations traditionally take place from August 13th to 15th. The preceding days feature the solemn novena of preparation, with Holy Masses at the Church of Cristo Re and the Basilica. On August 13th, the statue of the Madonna is carried in procession through the town streets, accompanied by a brass band.

August 14th features the traditional intorciata, an evocative torchlight procession where the statue is led toward the Church of Cristo Re to be watched over all night, followed by a sea of lit torches that create an unforgettable atmosphere. On the same day, pilgrims from the diocesan pilgrimage arrive in Leuca, many having traveled on foot throughout the night.

The sea procession

The highlight is the sea procession on August 15th. In the afternoon, following the solemn Mass, the statue of the Madonna is carried in a pageant to the Fishermen's Harbor, where it is embarked and accompanied by a flotilla of festively decorated boats. The naval procession travels along the coast between Punta Ristola and Punta Meliso, heading toward the bay of San Gregorio, amidst songs, prayers, and the sounding of boat sirens. The festival concludes at midnight with a grand fireworks display over the harbor, illuminating the sky and the sea of Leuca in one of the most beautiful moments of the entire Apulian summer.

A gathering of faith and community

During the festival days, the promenade and streets of Santa Maria di Leuca fill with market stalls, illuminations, concerts, and shows. The Solemn Celebrations in honor of the Madonna di Leuca represent much more than a patronal feast: they are the symbol of the maritime and religious identity of Capo di Leuca and the deep bond between the community of Castrignano del Capo, its sea, and its protector.

Madonna di Leuca Festival — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the Solemn Celebrations in honor of the Madonna di Leuca will be held from August 13th to 15th in Santa Maria di Leuca. The sea procession on August 15th and the midnight fireworks are confirmed.

For 2026, Santa Maria di Leuca is once again preparing for the Solemn Celebrations in honor of the Madonna de Finibus Terrae, scheduled from August 13th to 15th. The highlight is expected on Ferragosto, with the solemn Mass, the historic sea procession of the Madonna's statue embarked at the Fishermen's Harbor followed by decorated boats, and the grand fireworks display at midnight over the harbor.
