Sant'Antonio and Maris Stella Festival

A seaside festival in the heart of lower Salento

The Sant'Antonio and Maris Stella Festival is the most cherished summer event in Torre Pali, the seaside resort of the Municipality of Salve, in lower Salento in the Province of Lecce, on the southernmost tip of Apulia. Every year, in mid-August, the small coastal village gathers around its patron saints, transforming the promenade and its squares into a succession of rituals, music, and popular traditions that attract residents, vacationers, and visitors from across the region.

The festivities are dedicated to Sant'Antonio and Maris Stella (Our Lady, Star of the Sea), seen as the guiding star that protects those who make their living from the sea. According to local tradition, the two protectors were chosen by the community to invoke shelter from wars, raids, droughts, famines, and epidemics: an ancient devotion deeply rooted in the maritime identity of this stretch of coast.

The sea procession

The most evocative and defining element of the festival is the sea procession. A long line of boats accompanies the sacred image in a parade, circling the Torre di Pali, the ancient coastal tower that rises directly from the water and gave the village its name, once known as Marina Sant'Antonio. The boat procession finally returns to the small harbor in a moving spectacle that unites faith, memory, and landscape in a single collective rite.

Religious rites and devotion

The spiritual heart of the festival is the small chapel dedicated to the protectors: a modest building in size but richly decorated, an authentic treasure chest of popular devotion filled with the scent of incense. The civil program develops around the liturgical celebrations, following the typical pattern of Salento patronal feasts: illuminations, brass bands, concerts, and the traditional fair with stalls selling local food, sweets, and handicrafts that accompany the festive evenings.

Music, squares, and fireworks

The festival days alternate between religious moments and musical events: brass band concerts parading through the streets of the marina, live music, and entertainment evenings held in the squares of Torre Pali. The festivities conclude with the inevitable final fireworks display, which illuminates the sky over the Salento sea, bidding farewell to the protectors until the following year.

Torre Pali and the Salve area

Torre Pali is one of the most characteristic seaside resorts in the Municipality of Salve, appreciated for its shallow, clear waters and the unmistakable image of the tower emerging from the sea. The festival is part of the rich summer calendar of Salve, Pescoluse, and the surrounding marinas, promoted by the municipal administration, and represents an ideal opportunity to discover the hospitality, cuisine, and traditions of this authentic corner of Apulia, just a few kilometers from Santa Maria di Leuca.
