About Feast of the Holy Medici

Every September 27th, the town of Salve in lower Salento pays homage to the Holy Medici, Cosmas and Damian, the physician saints venerated throughout Puglia. Celebrations center around the Mother Church of San Nicola Magno, featuring daily Holy Masses, a solemn evening procession to the small church dedicated to the two saints, and the local town band, in a festival that weaves together popular faith, tradition, and the village's identity.

A festival of popular devotion in lower Salento

The Feast of the Holy Medici, Cosmas and Damian is one of the most heartfelt religious events of autumn in Salve, a small municipality in the Province of Lecce located at the extreme southern tip of Salento, just a few kilometers from the famous Marina di Pescoluse, known as the "Maldives of Salento." Every year, around September 27th, the community gathers around the figure of the two physician brothers to renew a devotion rooted for generations.

Who were the Holy Medici

Cosmas and Damian, traditionally twin brothers from the Christian East, practiced medicine by treating the sick without asking for payment: for this reason, they are remembered as the anargyroi (unmercenary) saints. Their cult is widespread throughout Puglia and Salento, where numerous towns celebrate them as protectors of health and patrons of physicians. In Salve, their feast complements the devotion to the patron saint San Nicola Magno and the co-patron Saint Teresa, both linked to the village's Mother Church.

The heart of the celebrations: the Mother Church of San Nicola Magno

The spiritual center of the festival is the Mother Church of San Nicola Magno, the main place of worship in Salve, whose origins date back to ancient times and which took on its current appearance during the 17th century. The church houses the monumental 1628 Olgiati-Mauro organ, considered one of the oldest still-functioning organs in Puglia. From here, the procession begins, accompanying the statues of the Holy Medici through the streets of the historic center to the small church dedicated to the Holy Medici.

How the day unfolds

The day of September 27th is marked by Holy Masses celebrated throughout the day and culminates in the late afternoon with the solemn evening procession, the moment of greatest popular participation. Accompanying the festivities is the traditional town marching band, which brings the streets of the town to life, while the community gathers amidst religious rites, illuminations, and the intimate atmosphere typical of Salento's patronal feasts.

A village to discover

Experiencing the Feast of the Holy Medici is also an opportunity to discover Salve and its territory: the historic center with its palaces and courtyards, the nearby Ionian coast with its long white sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters, and the hinterland dotted with masserie (fortified farmhouses) and ancient windmills. In a stretch of Salento that remains authentic, the late September festival unites faith, music, and conviviality in an experience deeply linked to the Puglian identity.
