The most anticipated festival of the year in Patù

In Patù, a tiny municipality of just over 1,600 inhabitants in the Province of Lecce, located on the extreme tip of Salento known as Capo di Leuca, September 29th is the most important date on the calendar. It is the day of Saint Michael the Archangel, the patron saint to whom the town's mother church is dedicated—an elegant late-Renaissance building from 1564 designed by Francesco Centolanze. Around this anniversary, the entire village unites in a celebration that weaves together religious devotion and popular joy, following the typical model of Apulian patronal feasts.

The procession and religious celebration

The central moment is the solemn procession: the bust and wooden statue of the Archangel are carried on shoulders through the streets of the historic center, followed by the faithful, authorities, and a brass band. The main streets of the town light up with the famous Salento luminarie, large wooden light structures that transform the village into a path of light, while religious services mark the day dedicated to the cult of the warrior Archangel.

Public festivities: bands, music, and fireworks

The sacred part is followed by public festivities, featuring traditional brass band concerts on the bandstand, evening musical performances in the square, and stalls that bring the town to life. The grand finale, as is the tradition for Salento's patronal feasts, is entrusted to the fireworks display: the pyrotechnics close the festivities, illuminating the sky of the Capo di Leuca.

A village to discover

The festival is also the perfect occasion to visit Patù, one of the most fascinating villages in lower Salento. The town stands not far from the ancient Messapian city of Vereto and houses the enigmatic Centopietre, a national monument since 1873—a rectangular construction made of stone blocks with frescoes inside, located in front of the Romanesque-Byzantine church of Saint John the Baptist. Devotion, folk traditions, and historical heritage thus merge in one of the most identity-defining events of the Municipality of Patù, in Puglia.
