The patronal festival of Capo di Leuca, blending devotion, light displays, and fireworks
The Festival of Saints Cosmas and Damian and Saint Michael the Archangel is the most cherished celebration in Castrignano del Capo, a town in lower Salento in the province of Lecce, Apulia, which also includes the hamlets of Giuliano and the famous Santa Maria di Leuca, where the Ionian and Adriatic seas meet. Every year, in the final days of September, the village gathers around its patron saints with a rich calendar of religious and civic events that animate the historic center for several days.
The festival unites two cults deeply rooted in the area: that of the Saints Cosmas and Damian, the two physician brothers venerated as protectors of health, and that of Saint Michael the Archangel, the town's patron saint, whose feast day falls on September 29th. The days are marked by solemn masses, novenas, and the well-attended procession with the statues of the saints carried through the streets, accompanied by a brass band and the devotion of the faithful.
Alongside the religious dimension is the ancient Saint Michael Fair, which precedes the main days of the festival, transforming the streets into a large open-air market with stalls selling local products, handicrafts, and all kinds of goods. It is a traditional appointment that attracts visitors from across the Capo di Leuca area and preserves the character of ancient Apulian village fairs.
In the evening, the town lights up with spectacular luminarie (light displays) that frame squares and streets, while the stages host brass band concerts, pop music shows, and performances by popular artists. The grand finale is entrusted to the pyrotechnic show, with fireworks closing the festivities over the Salento sky.
Organized by the Patronal Festival Committee together with the Saint Michael the Archangel Parish and the Municipality of Castrignano del Capo, the festival represents much more than a religious recurrence: it is the moment when the community reunites, emigrant residents return home, and the village shows visitors its most authentic identity, just a stone's throw from the evocative setting of Santa Maria di Leuca.
From September 26 to 29, 2026, Castrignano del Capo celebrates the Saints Cosmas and Damian and the patron saint Saint Michael the Archangel. The festival will follow its usual structure, with the Saint Michael Fair in the preceding days, religious services, the procession with the statues of the saints, light displays in the historic center, and musical evenings in the square. The grand finale will be the pyrotechnic show.
The complete calendar of evenings, including concerts and guest artists, will be announced by the Patronal Festival Committee and the Saint Michael the Archangel Parish closer to the event: it is recommended to check dates and the program with the Municipality of Castrignano del Capo.
Castrignano del Capo is located at the extreme south of Salento, in the province of Lecce. By car, it can be reached via the SS275 road in the direction of Santa Maria di Leuca. The most convenient train station is Gagliano-Leuca (Ferrovie del Sud Est); the nearest airport is Brindisi-Salento, followed by Bari.
The festivities take place in late September in the historic center and the area around the Church of Saint Michael the Archangel. The Saint Michael Fair occupies the town streets in the days leading up to the main festival.
Free admission to events in the square. It is recommended to check dates and the program with the Municipality or the Parish, as they may be subject to change. During the festival period, it is advisable to book accommodation in the Leuca area well in advance.
