The patronal feast of Corsano, blending faith, the focareddha bonfire, and Salento tradition
The Saint Blaise Festival is the most important celebration in the calendar of Corsano, a town in the lower Salento area of the province of Lecce, at the southern tip of Puglia. Dedicated to the Bishop of Sebaste, the town's patron saint and protector of the throat, the festival marks two key moments of the year and involves the entire community, drawing back many Corsanesi who have emigrated but return home for the occasion.
Saint Blaise is venerated in Corsano as the patron saint and protector against throat ailments. This devotion is rooted in a long popular tradition, documented by over seventy years of history: a municipal resolution from 1898 that established the Saint Blaise Fair, a theatrical script from 1897, and a band composition from 1922 dedicated to the Saint.
The liturgical feast of the Saint is celebrated on February 2nd and 3rd. The most heartfelt moment is the blessing of the throat, accompanied by the lighting of the traditional focareddha, the large bonfire that burns in Piazza San Biagio, and the historic market fair along Via della Libertà. The procession carrying the statue of the patron saint winds through the town center, accompanied by the local brass band.
At the beginning of August, the festival returns in its most spectacular form. The streets of the town light up with elaborate illuminations: the statue of the Saint passes through the fifteen arches of Piazza Umberto I and Via della Libertà until it reaches Piazza San Biagio, dominated by a facade over twenty-two meters high. The program combines religious rites, brass band concerts, musical performances in the square, and a grand fireworks display that concludes the festivities.
In 2026, the Saint Blaise Festival of Corsano was inscribed in the regional inventory of intangible cultural heritage of Puglia, in the section dedicated to social practices, rituals, and festive events. The candidacy, promoted by the Santa Sofia V.M. parish and the Festival Committee, has brought the festival onto the regional CartApulia platform, among the officially cataloged traditions of the Region.
Between faith, music, and conviviality, the Saint Blaise Festival remains one of the defining identity events of the Capo di Leuca area. The religious and secular events are free to attend and bring Corsano to life for several days, blending the sacred and the profane, rural memory, and popular entertainment.
