The patron saint festival in the heart of Lower Salento

On the southern tip of Salento, where the land narrows toward Santa Maria di Leuca, the small town of Gagliano del Capo (Province of Lecce, Puglia) dedicates its most cherished festival of the year to its patron, Saint Roch. Every summer, in the second half of August, the historic center glows with elaborate light displays, welcoming locals, curious travelers, and visitors returning home for the occasion.
The devotion of the people of Gagliano to Saint Roch dates back to the late 16th century, when—according to local tradition—the community was miraculously spared from the plague through the intercession of the pilgrim saint from Montpellier. Since then, Roch has been the town's protector, celebrated on August 16th, the day of his liturgical feast, with secular celebrations extending over the following days. His statue is housed in the Mother Church, a building begun in 1574 and completed in the early 17th century, which features an altar specifically dedicated to Saint Roch.
The religious heart of the festival is the solemn High Mass, featuring a panegyric on the saint's life and miracles, followed by a procession that carries the statue of the saint from the Mother Church through the town streets, accompanied by confraternities, the faithful, and brass bands playing traditional sacred marches.
The secular side of the festival brings the evenings to life: artistic light displays create arches of light over the squares, while orchestras and bands perform classical and popular music from the bandstand. There is no shortage of food stalls offering Salento specialties—pittule, horse meat stew, friselle, and traditional pastries—culminating in a spectacular fireworks display that lights up the sky over the Cape. Beyond its religious significance, the festival is a precious opportunity to rediscover the identity and hospitality of this corner of Puglia.
The 2026 edition of the Patronal Feast of Saint Roch in Gagliano del Capo (LE) will renew the summer tradition dedicated to the town's protector. As always, the event will feature the solemn High Mass in the Mother Church, the procession with the saint's statue through the illuminated streets, band concerts in the bandstand, and a final fireworks display.
At the moment, the dates and detailed program for 2026 have not yet been published. This page will be updated as soon as the Parish and the Festival Committee announce the official calendar.
