The liturgical feast of the patron saint of Salve on his dies natalis, December 6th
Every December 6th, the town of Salve, a village in the lower Salento area of the Lecce province, pays homage to its patron saint, Saint Nicholas of Myra. The date is no coincidence: December 6th is the dies natalis of the saint, marking his death in Myra, Lycia, in the 4th century. For this reason, throughout Puglia and particularly in Salento, December 6th is the liturgical moment that gathers popular devotion around the figure of the miracle-working bishop.
In Salve, Saint Nicholas is celebrated multiple times throughout the year. Alongside the major civil festivities—featuring illuminations, market stalls, brass bands, and shows—that traditionally enliven the town between spring and summer, there is the liturgical feast of December 6th, which carries a more collected and spiritual tone. It is on this date that the community rediscovers the most authentic sense of its bond with the patron saint, celebrated in the Mother Church dedicated to him.
The December celebration has an essentially religious soul. In the days leading up to the feast, a novena is held, with daily prayers and holy masses in honor of the saint. December 6th culminates with a solemn mass and, according to Salento tradition, a procession that carries the statue of Saint Nicholas through the streets of the historic center, accompanied by the faithful.
Devotion to Saint Nicholas in Salento is rooted in an ancient bond with Bari, the city that has guarded the saint's relics since 1087, after they were transported from Myra by a group of Bari sailors. From there, the cult spread to numerous towns in Puglia, and Salve—like many towns in the Capo di Leuca—chose Saint Nicholas as its protector. Even today, the figure of the Bishop of Myra, protector of children, sailors, and the vulnerable, remains a strong identity reference for the Salve community.
The December patronal feast is also an opportunity to visit Salve in its winter guise, far from the summer crowds of the nearby seaside resorts of Torre Pali and Pescoluse. The village, with its churches, historic buildings, and proximity to the beaches of the so-called "Maldives of Salento," offers visitors an authentic immersion into the religious and popular traditions of the lower Salento region of Puglia.
The patronal feast of Saint Nicholas in Salve is confirmed for December 6th, 2026, the day the liturgical calendar commemorates the dies natalis of the saint. As per tradition, the celebration will be primarily religious: a novena, holy masses, and a procession with the statue of the patron saint through the historic center of the village in the province of Lecce.
The detailed program—including mass times, the novena, and the procession—will be published by the Saint Nicholas Parish in the days leading up to the feast.
The celebrations take place at the Mother Church of Saint Nicholas and through the streets of the historic center of Salve (LE), in lower Salento.
