The 'Queen from the Sea': sea procession and fireworks in the port of Agropoli
Every year, on July 24th, the town of Agropoli, in the province of Salerno, Campania, gathers around the Madonna di Costantinopoli, protector of the city's fishermen and waters. It is the most heartfelt event of the Agropoli summer: for one day, the old town, the port, and the seafront become a single great space of popular devotion, where faith intertwines with the daily life of a community that has always drawn its livelihood from the sea.
Agropoli's devotion has roots in the Byzantine era, whenโaccording to local traditionโduring iconoclastic persecutions, some religious figures fled from the East, bringing sacred objects with them. After a shipwreck near the island of Licosa, an Agropoli sailor reportedly saw the sacred effigy 'floating on the water' in the Fortino area, below the cliff of the old town.
Two other miraculous episodes, part of local folklore, have forever linked the image to the city:
Hence the title by which the people of Agropoli still invoke her today: the 'Queen from the Sea'. The small church that houses her, documented at least since the 16th century (a confraternity is recorded as early as 1583), overlooks the tourist port from the promontory, a few steps from the monumental gate of the old town, and bears the inscription 'Ave Stella Maris' on its facade, an ancient Marian title linked to the protection of sailors and fishermen.
The festivities open on the eve, July 23rd, with the blessing of the sea at the port: Holy Mass is celebrated on the quay, and the sacred image is taken offshore on a fishing boat provided by local fishing families for the rite of blessing the waters and the vessels. It is a quiet and deeply felt moment, with fishermen and their families in the front row.
The festival comes to life in the late afternoon with Solemn Holy Mass and the solemn procession that winds through the alleys of the old town and the city streets, accompanied by brass bands. The procession then descends to the main pier of the port, where the embarkation of the sacred image takes place: the statue of the Blessed Virgin sets sail on a decorated fishing boat and navigates along the Agropoli coast, followed by dozens upon dozens of vessels, from small fishing boats to pleasure craft, in a long circuit of blessing.
Upon returning, the sacred image is brought back to the church, and the day concludes at midnight with the fireworks display over the sea: the fireworks, launched from the seafront and the beach clubs, reflect on the water and can be seen from across the entire bay.
Alongside the liturgical part, the parish Festival Committee manages the civil side of the event: illuminations in the center, band parades through the streets, concerts along the coast, and musical events in the small squares of the village, such as the Scaloni Ennio Balbo. Stalls selling sweets, nougat, and local products complete the atmosphere of this Cilento patronal feast.
Agropoli is considered the gateway to the Cilento and the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park: a village perched on a promontory, with an Angevin-Aragonese castle, a grand staircase, a 17th-century entrance gate, and a port still alive with fishing. Participating in the Madonna di Costantinopoli festival means seeing this landscape in its most authentic form, when Marian devotion and maritime culture are displayed without tourist filters.
The celebrations are free and open to everyone. The best spots to watch the sea procession are the pier, the San Marco seafront, and the panoramic terraces of the old town; for the fireworks, it is best to settle on the seafront a few hours in advance. In case of rough seas, the sea procession may be postponed by a few days, as happened in 2026: it is therefore useful to check updates from the parish and local press in the days immediately preceding the event.
The 2026 edition of the Madonna di Costantinopoli festival in Agropoli followed the traditional calendar for its liturgical part: blessing of the sea at the port on July 23rd and, on July 24th, Solemn Holy Mass at 6:00 PM followed by the procession of the statue of the Blessed Virgin through the alleys of the old town and the city streets. The celebration was broadcast live by the local broadcaster InfoCilento, on channel 79 of digital terrestrial television and via streaming.
Sea conditions prevented the most anticipated moment, the sea procession, from taking place. On the advice of the Maritime Authority, the parish rescheduled it for Wednesday, July 29th: Holy Mass at 6:30 PM, procession to the port area, embarkation of the sacred image, and navigation along the coast followed by boats, then return to the parish. At midnight, fireworks from the seafront and beach clubs concluded the festivities.
Once again this year, the parish reminded the faithful that devotion does not end on the day of the festival: the Madonna 'is not present among us only on the day of the feast' but remains in the church all year round for the prayers of the faithful.

By car: A2 'del Mediterraneo' motorway, Battipaglia exit, then SS 18 Tirrena Inferiore towards Agropoli. By train: Agropoli-Castellabate station on the Naples-Reggio Calabria line, about 2 km from the center (local buses and taxis available). By plane: Salerno Costa d'Amalfi or Naples Capodichino airport, then train or car.
On the evenings of the festival, the old town and the port area are closed to traffic: it is best to leave your car in the parking lots along the seafront or in the parking areas uphill and continue on foot. Arriving at least two hours before the procession is the wisest choice, as in July, Agropoli experiences both the festival and peak summer tourism.
Free admission: there are no tickets for the celebrations, the sea procession, or the fireworks.
Agropoli offers a wide range of accommodation (hotels, B&Bs, residences, campsites), but it is almost always fully booked by the end of July: book well in advance. Bring comfortable shoes for the alleys and staircases of the village, and check the sea forecast, as the sea procession depends on it.
