The patron saint of Rocca Cilento is celebrated twice a year, honoring both the miracle of the rain and the solemnity of August.
The Madonna della Neve Festival is the most cherished event in Rocca Cilento, an ancient medieval village belonging to the municipality of Lustra, in the province of Salerno, located in the heart of Campania and the Cilento region. Here, devotion to Saint Mary of the Snows is not limited to a single day: the community celebrates her twice a year, on May 25th and August 5th, with two distinct events united by the same thread of popular faith.
According to local tradition, the spring festival began as a votive memorial. During a dry spring, drought threatened the crops and the population feared famine; the people of Rocca turned to the Virgin and, as the story goes, her intercession brought the rain, saving the village from disaster. Since then, May 25th has remained on the community calendar as a day of thanksgiving.
The most recognizable feature of this event is the procession that still reaches the spot where, according to popular belief, the rain began to fall. It is a short but deeply meaningful journey that links religious devotion to the agricultural landscape surrounding the village.
The summer recurrence on August 5th, the date the liturgical calendar commemorates Saint Mary of the Snows, represents the heart of local devotion. It is the most solemn moment of the year for Rocca Cilento: the procession moves through the village, and the festival draws many emigrants who return to their hometown for the occasion, turning the day into a grand family and community reunion.
The focus of the festival is the parish church of Santa Maria della Neve, located in the southern part of the village and seat of the parish, which belongs to the Diocese of Vallo della Lucania. Just above it stands the Rocca Cilento Castle, an ancient baronial manor restored in the 1960s, which overlooks the Alento valley from the top of the village.
This is not a staged tourist attraction, but an authentic village festival: liturgical celebrations, a procession, festive church bells, and the conviviality that follows religious moments. Visitors will find a small center of a few hundred inhabitants that fills up for the day with relatives returning from afar and visitors from neighboring towns in Upper Cilento.
Rocca Cilento is one of the most evocative villages in the Cilento hinterland: stone alleys, glimpses of the Alento valley, and, on clear days, a view that stretches to the sea. Participating in the Madonna della Neve festival means experiencing the most authentic side of Cilento, where religious traditions are passed down from generation to generation, far from the crowded coastal beaches. It is also a perfect opportunity to discover the rest of the municipality of Lustra and the towns of the Union of Upper Cilento Municipalities, located within the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park.
On May 22, 2026, the local Cilento press promoted the May 25, 2026 event in Rocca Cilento, confirming the votive celebration dedicated to Santa Maria della Neve in the village of the municipality of Lustra, in the province of Salerno. As every year, the central moment was the procession that reaches the place where, according to tradition, the rain began to fall, ending the drought that threatened the crops.
The second event, the most solemn one, falls on August 5th, the fixed date of the commemoration of Santa Maria della Neve. It is the day when the community of Rocca Cilento gathers in full, with the return of many emigrants, around the parish church and the procession through the streets of the village. At the time of writing, no detailed schedule has been published online: times are usually communicated by the parish and posted in the village in the days immediately preceding.
Participation in the festival is free. Rocca Cilento, with its baronial castle and stone alleys, remains one of the most beautiful viewpoints in Upper Cilento: it overlooks the Alento valley, is a short distance from the Cilento coast, and is part of the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park.
Rocca Cilento is a hamlet of the municipality of Lustra, in the province of Salerno. It is accessible only by road: from the SS18 Cilentana highway, head inland at Agropoli or Omignano, continuing along the provincial roads of the Alento valley. The municipal territory sits at an altitude of about 466 meters. The most convenient train station is Agropoli-Castellabate, on the Naples-Reggio Calabria line; the nearest airport is Naples-Capodichino.
The celebrations revolve around the parish church of Santa Maria della Neve in the southern part of the village and continue with a procession through the town streets.
