The patronal feast of Marina di Casal Velino, featuring solemn rites, the Palio, and the maritime traditions of the Cilento region
The Festivities in Honor of Saint Matthew are the most anticipated event of the year in Casal Velino, a town in the Province of Salerno, Campania, overlooking the stretch of the Cilento coast between Velia and Ascea. The heart of the festival beats in Marina di Casal Velino, the seaside district where, around September 21st—the liturgical day of the apostle—religious celebrations, popular events, and moments of great collective participation are concentrated.
This festival ideally closes the summer season in Casal Velino: as the beaches empty and the town returns to its most authentic dimension, the community gathers for a few days around its patron saint, blending faith, historical memory, gastronomy, and entertainment.
Saint Matthew is the patron saint of nearby Salerno, where his relics are kept in the cathedral, but devotion to the apostle is deeply rooted along the entire Cilento coast. In Marina di Casal Velino, the memory of the saint is linked to the Chapel of Saint Matthew, a small place of worship overlooking the sea, recently restored and reopened thanks to the efforts of the founders of the "La Via di San Matteo" association, which has also made it a stop on a devotional pilgrimage route.
Local tradition recalls the passage of the relics along this coastline: this is the origin of the evocative re-enactment of the landing, one of the most photographed moments of the entire event. In addition to the September festival, the community also remembers the apostle in the spring, coinciding with the Salernitan commemoration of the translation of the saint's body.
The devotional aspect is the pillar of the festivities and follows a pattern established over the years:
Alongside the religious rites, the most identity-defining moment of the secular program is the Palio di San Matteo, organized by the Pro Loco of Casal Velino together with the Nosside cultural association and with the support of the Municipality. The Palio, announced as its fifteenth edition, combines a challenge between the districts, a historical pageant, and historical storytelling: a formula that over the years has been enriched with in-depth meetings on the tradition of the Palio and literary presentations, transforming the evening into a full-fledged cultural event.
The beach of Torre Dominella hosts the re-enactment of the landing of the relics of Saint Matthew, curated by the Nosside association: actors in costume, torches, and boats reconstruct the historical moments linked to the relationship between the saint and the Cilento community. It is one of the most scenic tableaux of the festival, with the sea and the coastal tower serving as a natural backdrop.
On the evening of the solemnity, Piazza Marconi, on the Marina waterfront, becomes the stage for the festival: lyrical-symphonic music and concerts alternate with the fireworks display over the sea, the traditional seal of the festivities. In the following days, the regatta of the gozzi—the traditional boats of local fishermen—takes place, followed by another musical event. There is also the Saint Matthew Fair, with stalls, local products, and food stands dedicated to Cilento cuisine and the local catch.
September is perhaps the best month to discover this corner of Campania: the climate is still mild, the sea remains swimmable, and the Municipality's calendar concentrates the most beautiful events of the year into a few weeks. A few kilometers away are the Archaeological Park of Velia, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park: the Saint Matthew festival thus becomes the perfect occasion for a weekend that combines popular tradition, archaeology, and the Mediterranean diet.
The Municipality of Casal Velino has included the festivities in honor of Saint Matthew in the official «Estate Casalvelinese 2026» program, designating September 21st as the solemn day at the Marina: the patronal feast thus closes the entire season of events in the Cilento town, following weeks dedicated to music, culture, and gastronomy in the districts of Acquavella, Carullo, and Bivio Acquavella.
As per tradition, the preceding days are marked by the preparatory triduum and popular events organized by the Pro Loco, primarily the Palio di San Matteo and the re-enactment of the landing of the relics on the beach of Torre Dominella, curated by the Nosside association. On the evening of the feast, the waterfront lights up with the procession, music in Piazza Marconi, and fireworks over the sea.
During the same period, the tourist port hosts a gastronomic event dedicated to the local catch, while the municipal sports field hosts the sports tournament named after the saint: September remains the liveliest month of the year for the community of Casal Velino.
By car: Take the Battipaglia exit on the A2 del Mediterraneo motorway, then follow the SS18 towards Vallo della Lucania and take the turn-off for Casal Velino Marina. By train: Ascea or Vallo della Lucania-Castelnuovo station on the Salerno-Reggio Calabria line, then bus or taxi (a few kilometers away). By plane: Salerno-Costa d'Amalfi Airport or Naples-Capodichino Airport.
Events are concentrated in Marina di Casal Velino: the parish church, the Chapel of Saint Matthew, Piazza Marconi on the waterfront, the tourist port, and the beach of Torre Dominella.
