Two evenings of celebration and charity in the hamlet of Alano, between the Cilento hills and the sea
Alano in Festa is the summer event of the Alano hamlet, one of the most intimate clusters in the municipality of Castellabate, in the Province of Salerno, Campania region. With just under four hundred inhabitants, a square, and a church dedicated to Saint Rose, these ingredients are all it takes for the village to transform into a lively square open to the entire territory for two summer evenings. This is not a large-scale commercial festival, but something rarer: a festival built by the community for the community, with a clear charitable purpose and a genuine, unscripted sense of hospitality.
The proven formula is repeated over two distinct appointments, one in late July and one in August. The venue is always Piazzale Santa Rosa, where the evenings kick off at 8:30 PM. The program then unfolds fluidly until late at night:
Everything takes place outdoors, in a square that remains pleasantly breezy in the summer: those who arrive early find a seat at the tables, while those who arrive later join in standing, plate in hand, just as the tradition of Cilento festivals dictates.
The gastronomy is the aspect that best tells the story of the place. The menu for the evenings features some absolute classics of Cilento popular cuisine: fried pizza, served in the version with onions and the traditional Cilento style, Cilento-style fusilli with sauce hand-rolled according to tradition, porchetta sandwiches served with fries, desserts prepared in the village, watermelon, and local wine. It is festive, generous, and unpretentious food that makes the trip to the inland area of Castellabate worth it on its own.
Behind these two evenings is the Saint Anthony and Saint Rose Parish, which promotes the event with a dual objective: to support the celebrations in honor of Saint Rose of Lima, the patron saint of the hamlet celebrated on August 23rd, and to donate the proceeds to charitable causes. The motto accompanying the festival is in the Cilento dialect and says everything about the spirit with which it is organized: «Cchiù simo e cchiù belli parimo»—the more of us there are, the better we look. An invitation, even before it is a slogan.
Alano is divided between Lower Alano, which is flat, and Upper Alano, which is hilly, sitting just over twenty meters above sea level and a short distance from the beaches of Santa Maria di Castellabate. We are inside the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, in a territory where agriculture, livestock farming, and boat building have always coexisted with seaside tourism. Castellabate, with its medieval village recognized as one of the most beautiful in Italy, is just a few minutes' drive away: Alano in Festa is the perfect opportunity to combine a day at the beach with an authentic village evening.
Those looking for large-scale musical productions will find big-name stage acts elsewhere in the rich summer calendar of Castellabate. However, those who want to understand how summer is experienced in Cilento—among volunteers at the stoves, children running in the square, and families reuniting after the winter—will find exactly what they are looking for in Alano. Admission is free, and you only pay for what you consume, with typical village-festival prices.
Two dates, one square. The 2026 edition of the Alano festival, a hamlet in the municipality of Castellabate in the Province of Salerno, is concentrated into two evenings: the first on July 23rd, the second on August 11th. In both cases, the meeting point is Piazzale Santa Rosa starting at 8:30 PM.
The event is promoted by the Saint Anthony and Saint Rose Parish and maintains its nature as a community festival for charitable purposes. The proceeds support the celebrations in honor of Saint Rose of Lima, the patron saint of the hamlet, and the solidarity initiatives of the Alano community.
The program alternates moments of entertainment and conviviality: craft markets set up along the square, live musical animation curated by Patty Music, food stalls managed by volunteers, and, to close, pyrotechnic shows.
On the culinary front, the menu remains faithful to the tradition of Cilento: fried pizza with onions and traditional Cilento fried pizza, Cilento-style fusilli with sauce, porchetta sandwiches with fries, various desserts, watermelon, and wine. Admission is free, and you only pay for what you consume.
The program may be subject to change: it is advisable to check for updates published by the organizers in the days leading up to the event.
