On October 16th, Trentinara celebrates its patron saint with traditional cente offerings, a procession, and fireworks, following the traditional fair on the 14th.
Every October 16th, Trentinaraโa village perched on a panoramic plateau in the heart of the Cilento National Park, in the province of Salerno (Campania)โcomes to a standstill to honor its patron saint, Saint Irene of Thessalonica. It is the most important day on the village calendar: families who have moved away return home, houses reopen, the historic center glows with festive lights, and the community reunites around a ritual that has remained unchanged for generations. This feast is more than just a religious appointment; it is the moment when the small municipality fully reconnects with its own identity.
The name Irene means peace in Greek, and in Trentinara, the saint is venerated primarily as a protector against atmospheric phenomena and dangers. Local tradition links this cult to a violent storm that struck the village on February 24, 1924, causing injuries; the parish priest at the time insisted that this date be commemorated annually. Since then, Saint Irene is celebrated three times: on October 16th, with the main patronal feast; on February 24th; and on Easter Monday, with a mass in the Church of the Rosary followed by a procession. However, this devotion is much older, with deep roots in Cilento's popular religious history.
Two days before the main event, on October 14th, the traditional Saint Irene Fair takes place. For centuries, this has been an opportunity for trade and exchange for the inland villages, with market stalls filling the streets. Today, the fair remains the official opening of the festivities and continues to attract visitors from neighboring Cilento towns.
On October 16th, the day begins very early. In previous editions, the program has unfolded as follows:
The statue of the saint, adorned with flowers, travels through the narrow alleys of the historic center: it is the most anticipated and well-attended moment of the entire day.
The religious events are always accompanied by a civil program organized by the Feast Committee. The stage is set up in Piazza dei Martiri e degli Eroi, the heart of the village, and in previous years it has hosted concerts, dance orchestras, cabaret shows, and the classic midnight lottery drawing. The festive lights, managed by specialized local firms, transform the entire historic center for a few days.
Trentinara is known as the balcony of Cilento for the view that opens from its belvedere over the Sele plain and the Gulf of Salerno, reaching as far as Capaccio-Paestum. With just over a thousand inhabitants, a stone-built historic center, and a gastronomy rooted in wood-fired bread and mountain products, the Saint Irene feast is the best opportunity to discover the village in its most authentic dimension, when the Cilento autumn offers clear days and mild temperatures.
The festivities are managed by the Feast Committee together with the parish, under the patronage of the Municipality of Trentinara. Admission to all religious and civil events is free.
The Saint Irene commemoration is on a fixed date: October 16th, which falls on a Friday this year. As per tradition, the festivities open two days earlier with the Saint Irene Fair on October 14th, filling the village streets with market stalls.
The patronal day includes religious celebrations in the parish church, the collection of the cente, a procession with the statues along the historic center, and the traditional fireworks. In the evening, the party moves to Piazza dei Martiri e degli Eroi, where the Feast Committee sets up the stage for the shows.
Trentinara, with just over a thousand inhabitants in the Cilento National Park, in the province of Salerno, experiences its most important community event of the year during these days: many who have emigrated return to the village specifically for the patron saint's feast.
By car: from the A2 motorway (Salerno-Reggio Calabria), take the Battipaglia exit, then the SS18 towards Capaccio-Paestum and the provincial road to Trentinara; from the Cilento coast, it is a 20-minute drive up from Capaccio. By train: Paestum or Capaccio-Roccadaspide station on the Salerno-Reggio Calabria line, then bus or taxi to the village.
The historic center has narrow alleys and is largely pedestrianized during the feast days: it is best to leave your car in the parking areas at the entrance to the village and continue on foot.
Free admission to all celebrations, the procession, and the square performances. Any purchases at market stalls or stands are paid for individually.
At over 600 meters above sea level, October evenings can be cool: it is best to bring a jacket. For those wishing to watch the procession, we recommend positioning yourself along the route in the morning, as the alleys fill up quickly.
