About Onion Festival

In the medieval village of Vatolla, a hamlet of Perdifumo in the heart of Cilento, the Vatolla Onion Festival celebrates a unique product for seven evenings: the pink onion, a Slow Food Presidium, sweet and fragrant, grown only on these hills. Between the stone alleys and the Piazzetta Belvedere, enjoy tastings of rustic dishes, Cilento folk music, book presentations, photography exhibitions, and street performances. Free admission, in the province of Salerno.

A festival in the village of Giambattista Vico

At an altitude of 465 meters, on the slopes of Monte Stella, Vatolla is one of the hamlets of the Municipality of Perdifumo, in the province of Salerno, in the heart of the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park. Its historic center has kept its medieval layout almost intact: winding alleys, stone arches, courtyards, and stairways that suddenly open onto the panoramic view of the hills. It is here that the philosopher Giambattista Vico lived from 1686 to 1695, a guest in the Rocca castle, and this scholarly memory provides the backdrop for the festival that brings the village to life every summer.

The Vatolla Onion Festival is not just a random food fair: it is a cultural project built over time by the Vatolla Onion Association, which chooses a central theme each year and builds evenings of gastronomy, music, meetings, and exhibitions around it. The event takes place over several weekends between July and August and has obtained the patronage of the Campania Region, the Province of Salerno, the Cilento National Park, and the Municipality of Perdifumo.

The Vatolla Onion, a Slow Food Presidium

The star is a local variety of pink onion grown exclusively in this territory, recognized as a traditional product of the Campania Region and protected as a Slow Food Presidium. It is a sweet, fragrant, and very versatile onion with tender flesh, suitable for both raw consumption and long cooking. Local tradition traces its seeds back to an ancient introduction to Cilento, linked to the passage of Italo-Greek monks and contacts with the eastern Mediterranean.

The recovery of this variety has been a true community effort in recent years: a few hectares cultivated, seeds preserved from family to family, and a group of producers who chose not to abandon a crop that is not very profitable but defines their identity. The festival is both a showcase and the economic engine of this recovery, as well as an opportunity to share the agricultural biodiversity of Cilento.

At the table: festival dishes

The menu at the food stalls is entirely built around the onion, featured in traditional Cilento rustic preparations:

  • Susciello di cipolla, the traditional soup with extra virgin olive oil and cheese
  • Onion parmigiana and au gratin onions
  • Meatballs, fritters, and onion omelets
  • First courses such as tagliolini with onion ragù, ravioli, and pasta alla genovese
  • Meat main courses accompanied by stewed or caramelized onions
  • Onion jams, traditional desserts, and Cilento wines

All this in a context that is already a piece of the Mediterranean Diet: Cilento is its recognized homeland, and the festival dedicates space every year to workshops and meetings on the subject.

Music, books, and folk culture

Alongside the kitchen, the cultural program is the true hallmark of the event. Each evening features book presentations with authors, photography exhibitions set up in the alleys, street artist performances, activities for children, and above all live Cilento folk music, with groups bringing tammurriate, tarantellas, and traditional oral songs to the square.

Each edition revolves around a theme: in 2025 it was Genius Loci, the spirit of the place that inspired Vico; in 2026 it is In Cibo Veritas: identity, taste, and tradition. During the festival, the «Onion Vatolla» Award is also presented, a recognition for personalities who have distinguished themselves in culture, art, entrepreneurship, and journalism by linking themselves to the Cilento territory.

Why it's worth the trip

Those who arrive in Vatolla do not find an anonymous fair but a village that opens up: houses open their courtyards, small squares become open-air dining rooms, and the Piazzetta Belvedere transforms into a stage overlooking the hills. Admission is free and the evenings begin at 8:00 PM, when the heat of the Cilento day fades and the hill air becomes cool.

It is one of the best opportunities to understand inland Cilento, the area behind the beaches of Acciaroli and Santa Maria di Castellabate: a hinterland made of small municipalities, subsistence farming that has become excellence, and communities that choose to tell their own story. The Vatolla Onion Festival, in this sense, is much more than a food festival: it is a successful exercise in identity.

Onion Festival — edition 2026

The eleventh edition of the Vatolla Onion Festival takes place over seven evenings, from July 25 to August 22, 2026, in the ancient village of Vatolla in Perdifumo. The chosen theme is «In Cibo Veritas: identity, taste, and tradition»: tastings, book presentations, a photography exhibition, a falconry show, a workshop on the Mediterranean Diet, and Cilento folk music concerts revolve around the pink onion, a Slow Food Presidium. Free admission, stalls open at 8:00 PM.

11th edition — In Cibo Veritas

2026 brings the eleventh edition of the Onion Festival to Vatolla, a hamlet of Perdifumo in the province of Salerno, spread over three summer weekends (July 25-26, August 1-2, August 8-9) plus a final evening on Saturday, August 22. The guiding theme is «In Cibo Veritas: identity, taste, and tradition», a reflection on the bond between an agricultural product, the memory of a community, and the landscape of inland Cilento.

The event is organized by the Vatolla Onion Association, chaired by Angela Marzucca, with the patronage of the Campania Region, the Province of Salerno, the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park, and the Municipality of Perdifumo, and with the support of BCC Magna Grecia. The goal declared by the organizers is to promote the Vatolla Onion not only as an agri-food excellence, but as an expression of the history and identity of the territory.

What to expect

Each evening begins at 8:00 PM with the opening of the food stalls set up between the Piazzetta Belvedere and the alleys of the historic center. The menu is entirely built around the pink onion: appetizers, traditional rustic first courses, main courses, jams, and typical desserts, accompanied by Cilento wines. Following this, cultural and musical events begin, with book presentations, exhibitions, and folk music concerts. Admission to all evenings is free.
