The patron saint's Ferragosto in the seaside village of Castellabate
In the Municipality of Castellabate, in the province of Salerno, August 15th is no ordinary date: it is the day of Santa Maria a Mare, patron saint of the seaside district of Santa Maria and the figure around whom the community's identity has revolved for nearly two centuries. The patronal festival coincides with the Solemnity of the Assumption and transforms the Cilento coastline into a long narrative of devotion, lights, music, and the sea.
The Sanctuary of Santa Maria a Mare, located on Via Gennaro Naso, just a few steps from the Marina Piccola beach, has roots in a place of worship already mentioned in 1102 as ยซSanta Maria presso il mareยป. The current church stems from a notarial deed in August 1826, by which the community committed to building a new structure: work was completed in 1836, the year of its solemn blessing. Having become an autonomous parish in 1911, the sanctuary was elevated to a diocesan Marian sanctuary on October 25, 2007. The patron saint's statue, restored in 2017 at the Abbey of Cava de' Tirreni, has since returned to the center of the celebrations.
Since 1836, every Ferragosto, the statue of the Madonna is carried in a solemn procession through the streets of the ancient seaside village. It is perhaps the most intense image of the festival: the simulacrum, literally covered in the offerings of the faithful, exits the sanctuary and traverses alleys and the seafront, accompanied by a crowd arriving from across the Cilento region and all parts of Italy. The afternoon begins with the recitation of the rosary in the church, followed by Holy Mass in Piazza Lucia โ the living room overlooking the sea of Santa Maria โ and then the procession through the streets of the district.
On the eve of the festival, August 14th, the historic Palio della Stuzza is held, a skill game of ancient maritime tradition: a chestnut pole about eighteen meters long is suspended horizontally over the sea and made extremely slippery with soap and oil; the winner is the one who manages to grab the last of the flags placed at the end without falling into the water. The competition, watched from the cliffs and by dozens of boats, is organized by the Associazione Cilentani DOC with the patronage of the Municipality and was recognized in September 2025 as intangible heritage of the Campania Region. In 2026, the 125th edition will be celebrated.
The grand finale is entrusted to the fireworks display that, at the stroke of midnight between August 15th and 16th, illuminates the stretch of water in front of Santa Maria. The fireworks are launched from the cliffs and reflect on the gulf: they are watched from the seafront, the beaches, the terraces, and the boats at anchor, and it is traditionally one of the most anticipated moments of the entire Cilento summer.
On August 13th, the streets of Santa Maria host the traditional fair, with stalls of local products, handicrafts, and sweets. During the festival days, the town is dressed in lights and the seafront venues remain open until late at night: it is the perfect opportunity to taste the seafood cuisine of Cilento, mozzarella nella mortella, white figs, and the wines of the coast.
Castellabate is one of the symbolic places of the coastal Campania: the upper village, of medieval origin, dominates the districts of Santa Maria and San Marco from above, in the heart of the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park. Participating in the Santa Maria a Mare festival means seeing this landscape in its most vibrant and popular version, where the community recognizes itself every year in the same ritual, amidst faith, sea, and tradition.
The Ferragosto calendar in Santa Maria di Castellabate remains faithful to its historic structure. The central moment is the Solemnity of the Assumption on August 15th, with celebrations in the sanctuary, Holy Mass in Piazza Lucia, and the procession of the statue of Santa Maria a Mare along the streets of the seaside district.
August 14th is the day of the Palio della Stuzza, which in 2026 marks its 125th edition: meeting at 4:30 PM on the Lungomare Perrotti cliffs, organized by the Associazione Cilentani DOC with the patronage of the Municipality of Castellabate. The event was inscribed in September 2025 as an intangible heritage asset of the Campania Region.
The grand finale, as per tradition, is the fireworks display over the waters of Santa Maria, at the stroke of midnight between August 15th and 16th.
The times for the August 15th celebrations follow the established custom of recent years: the detailed program for the 2026 edition, with final times, will be released by the Festival Committee and the Municipality of Castellabate in the days immediately preceding the festival.
By car: A2 del Mediterraneo motorway, Battipaglia exit, then SS18 to Agropoli and the provincial road to Santa Maria di Castellabate. By train: Agropoli-Castellabate station on the Salerno-Reggio Calabria line, then bus or taxi (about a dozen kilometers).
During the festival days, the center of Santa Maria is largely pedestrianized: it is advisable to leave the car in the parking areas along the provincial road and reach the seafront on foot. For the midnight fireworks, it is best to arrive well in advance, as the seafront fills up very quickly.
Religious celebrations, the procession, the Palio della Stuzza, and the fireworks display are free and open to the public.
