The Patron Saint of Torchiara

The Most Holy Savior is the patron saint of Torchiara, a small town in the province of Salerno, Campania, nestled in the hills of Cilento just a short distance from the sea. Every year on August 6th, the day the Church celebrates the Transfiguration of the Lord, the village pauses to pay homage to its protector with a festival that weaves together religious devotion, music, and local Cilento traditions. It is one of the most anticipated events of the Torchiara summer, when the village homes fill with relatives returning for the occasion.

A nine-century-old church

The heart of the festivities is the Church of the Most Holy Savior, which dates back to around 1100 and dominates the town from a panoramic position overlooking the plains of Paestum and the Gulf of Agropoli. The three-aisled interior houses 17th and 18th-century wooden statues and busts placed in stucco-ornamented niches, as well as the precious Polyptych of the Transfiguration, one of the most significant artistic treasures in the region. This is where the liturgical celebrations are centered and where the procession begins.

How the festival unfolds

The structure of the festival follows a consolidated pattern, repeated from generation to generation and common to many patronal feasts in Cilento:

According to local custom, the festivities are spread between August 5th and 6th: the eve is dedicated to preparation and anticipation, while the 6th is reserved for the solemnity itself. Torchiara, the village of towers

The name of the town is said to derive from Turris Clara, the illustrious tower, in reference to the medieval fortifications that marked its origin. Torchiara has just over two thousand inhabitants and preserves a fascinating urban fabric, characterized by noble palaces that belonged to the De Vita, De Feo, Siniscalchi, Torre, Mangone, Albini, and Visco families. In the 19th century, the town played an active role in the Cilento Risorgimento uprisings, earning it the reputation of being a hotbed of insurrection in 1848. The hamlet of Copersito houses the Church of Santa Barbara, the Chapel of San Giuseppe, and the 16th-century Baronial Palace de Conciliis, with its square and circular towers.

A summer full of events

The Feast of the Most Holy Savior is part of a dense summer calendar. In the same month of August, the village hosts the medieval festival in the historic center of Copersito, featuring costumed re-enactments, flag-wavers, ancient music, and dances, while throughout the summer season, the Summer Solstice initiatives take place, including concerts, theater, and gastronomic offerings. In winter, on January 16th and 17th, it is time for Sant'Antuono, with the traditional bonfire and the blessing of the animals.
