The Madonna della Provvidenza Rural Festival is one of the most heartfelt traditions in Santa Caterina Villarmosa, a town in the province of Caltanissetta, Sicily. It takes place in early September, traditionally concluding on the first Sunday of the month, near the countryside chapel dedicated to the Madonna della Provvidenza, built in the early 19th century on a hill overlooking the town, about three hundred meters away.
The festival originated alongside the chapel and is rooted in one of the most important livestock fairs in Sicily, once recognized by Royal Decree. Originally a one-day event, it has grown over time into a four-day celebration that blends religious observance—with the pilgrimage to the chapel and rites dedicated to the Virgin—with the communal, folk spirit of the local farming population.
The secular heart of the festival lies in its traditional games, which draw both young and old to the chapel area:
Among the most spectacular elements of the tradition is u cavaddru, a wooden horse covered in crepe paper and decorated like a traditional Sicilian cart, upon which pyrotechnic illuminations are lit at dusk, creating a display of light and movement followed by fireworks.
The festival is also an opportunity to rediscover the rustic gastronomy of the area. At the long open-air tables, you can enjoy boiled chickpeas and fava beans, cuccìa, muffuletti topped with meat sauce, and the inevitable grilled meats, all accompanied by good local wine and the convivial atmosphere typical of countryside festivals.
Described by the locals as the town's most cherished event, the Madonna della Provvidenza Rural Festival is a cornerstone of identity for the Municipality of Santa Caterina Villarmosa and the entire inland area of the Sicilian province of Caltanissetta, attracting residents, returning emigrants, and visitors eager to experience an authentic rural celebration.
The Madonna della Provvidenza Rural Festival returns in 2026 to Santa Caterina Villarmosa, in the province of Caltanissetta. As every year, the event is scheduled for early September, featuring traditional popular games (the antenna, pignatuna, cuccagna), rustic cuisine, and moments of devotion at the countryside chapel. The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been made official: the final calendar will be communicated by the Municipality of Santa Caterina Villarmosa.
The festival is held at the Madonna della Provvidenza countryside chapel, on a hill about 300 meters from the town of Santa Caterina Villarmosa (CL), Sicily.
By car: Santa Caterina Villarmosa can be reached via the SS122 and the local road network of the Caltanissetta province; the provincial capital is about 15 km away. The nearest train station is Caltanissetta, from which you can continue by bus.
