The Saint John Bosco Festival, which everyone in Cammarata simply calls the Don Bosco Festival, is the religious and popular celebration that closes the town's summer season. It takes place in the heart of the village, centered around the Church of San Domenico and the spacious Piazza della Vittoria, with festivities extending along Via Libertร . Cammarata is a town in the province of Agrigento, in Sicily, set within the Sicani Mountains, and this festival represents one of the most cherished community gatherings of the year.
The festival traditionally falls on the second Sunday of September, with a program concentrated between Friday and Sunday. During the peak days, a variety of shows animate the square until late at night, involving families, young people, and visitors from neighboring towns.
One of the most beloved features of the festival is the 5-a-side football tournament, which has always been organized before the start of the main festivities in the parking area of the Dante Alighieri Middle School. It is a highly anticipated event that precedes and accompanies the festival, weaving together religious devotion, sports, and community spirit into one great village celebration.
The program alternates between religious moments and entertainment evenings. In recent years, the festival has featured cabaret, with the participation of well-known Sicilian comedians, and live music concerts that conclude the evenings in the square. The formula combines tradition, culture, gastronomy, and fun, transforming Piazza della Vittoria into the new beating heart of Cammarata's social life.
The culinary dimension is not to be missed, with food trails dedicated to the flavors of the territory. Among the star specialties is the Guastedda a Facci di Vecchia, a typical local dish linked to the village's artisanal tradition, a symbol of a simple and authentic cuisine that tells the story and flavors of the Sicani Mountains.
The festival is linked to one of the oldest sites in the town: the Church of San Domenico, which dates back to 1509 and stands where the ancient church and hospice of Saint Anthony Abbot once stood. Around this historic space, the devotion to Saint John Bosco is renewed every year in a festival that unites memory, faith, and popular participation.
The 2026 edition of the Don Bosco Festival in Cammarata is expected, as every year, in September, in line with the tradition that sees the festivities take place on the second Sunday of the month. At the moment, the official dates and program have not yet been published. The usual proceedings are expected around the Church of San Domenico and Piazza della Vittoria, with religious celebrations, evening shows, local gastronomy, and the 5-a-side football tournament. Updates will be shared by the Comitato San Giovanni Bosco Cammarata.
The festivities take place in the center of Cammarata (AG), around the Church of San Domenico, in Piazza della Vittoria, and along Via Libertร .
