The patronal feast of Caltavuturo, the heart of Marian devotion in the Madonie mountains
In Caltavuturo, a small village perched in the Madonie Park in the province of Palermo, the Feast of Maria Santissima del Soccorso is much more than a simple religious observance: it is the event that reunites the entire community every year, including emigrants who return specifically for the occasion. The cult of the Madonna del Soccorso has its roots in the tradition of the Augustinian hermits: the veneration of the Virgin under this title originated within the Sicilian Augustinian order and subsequently spread throughout the rest of the country. In Caltavuturo, the devotion became firmly established between the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
The statue venerated, a wooden effigy dating back to the late 1800s, is kept in the Church of Sant'Agostino, known by locals as the "Chiesa del Collegio," the former seat of the Augustinian hermits. During the days of the feast, the statue is transferred in a solemn procession from the Chiesa del Collegio to the Mother Church, where the village renews its entrustment to its patroness. It is in these historic sites that the spiritual core of the feast is concentrated, amidst Eucharistic celebrations and moments of prayer that accompany the community in the days leading up to September 10th.
The most anticipated moment is the solemn procession on September 10th, when the statue of the Madonna is carried on shoulders through the streets of the village, surrounded by lines of the faithful. The day begins with a morning Eucharistic celebration, attended by the members of the Maria SS. del Soccorso Confraternity, and concludes with a long afternoon parade through the historic center. It is one of the most evocative expressions of popular Madonie religiosity, where the sacred intertwines with the sense of belonging of an entire community.
Caltavuturo is one of the Sicilian towns that venerates the Madonna del Soccorso, alongside centers such as Sciacca, Racalmuto, and Castellammare del Golfo. The feast is organized jointly by the Santi Pietro e Paolo Parish, the Maria SS. del Soccorso Confraternity, and the Municipality of Caltavuturo. Surrounding the religious celebrations, the village comes alive with a festive atmosphere, featuring illuminations, entertainment, and the conviviality typical of patronal feasts in the Sicilian hinterland. For those visiting the Madonie in early September, it is a precious opportunity to discover the authenticity of a small village and the strength of a tradition passed down through generations.
For 2026, the celebrations in honor of Maria SS. del Soccorso in Caltavuturo are confirmed from September 8th to 10th, in accordance with the calendar of Sicilian patronal feasts. As per tradition, the highlight will be the solemn procession on September 10th, with the Marian statue carried through the streets of the Madonie village's historic center.
The detailed 2026 program, including mass times, devotional moments, and civil events, will be announced by the Santi Pietro e Paolo Parish and the Maria SS. del Soccorso Confraternity in the weeks preceding the feast. Please refer to the Confraternity's official channels for the final program.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition has not yet been published. Based on tradition, the feast includes the transfer of the statue from the Chiesa del Collegio to the Mother Church, daily Eucharistic celebrations, and, on September 10th, the morning Eucharistic celebration followed by the solemn afternoon procession through the village streets.
