Dandelion Weeks in the German-speaking Upper Val di Non
The Löwenzahnwochen am Deutschnonsberg — literally the "dandelion weeks" — are a spring event that celebrates a wild herb too often overlooked: the dandelion (Löwenzahn in German). The festival takes place on the Deutschnonsberg, the German-speaking plateau of the Upper Val di Non, spanning the municipalities of Senale-San Felice, Proveis, and Lauregno, in the Autonomous Province of Bolzano (South Tyrol), in the Trentino-Alto Adige region.
Founded in 1996, the initiative is now one of the longest-running themed culinary weeks in the province: in 2026, the event celebrates its thirtieth edition. The idea of centering a gastronomic festival around a healthy wild herb is rooted in Alpine folk tradition, which has recognized the dandelion's detoxifying and digestive properties for centuries. The plant is rich in bitter substances, vitamins, flavonoids, iron, potassium, and inulin: it aids digestion, supports liver and gallbladder function, and is traditionally used as a spring tonic.
Throughout the festival, a selection of restaurants and inns on the Deutschnonsberg — including Zum Hirschen, Gasthof Zur Sonne, and Gasthaus Waldrast — dedicate their menus to the dandelion, with creations ranging from herb soup to whole-grain risotto with fresh cheese, and even Schmarrn with caramelized walnuts and dandelion honey.
The Deutschnonsberg is a borderland between South Tyrol and Trentino, where the German language is still spoken and rural landscapes remain intact. When the meadows transform into a sea of yellow flowers, the Löwenzahnwochen offer the ideal opportunity to discover an off-the-beaten-path corner of the South Tyrolean mountains, combining the pleasure of fine dining with the rediscovery of genuine flavors and a healthy relationship with nature.
The 2026 festival combined seasonal cuisine with a calendar of events focused on nature and wellness. Among the initiatives on the program: a cooking workshop, a conference dedicated to wild herbs, two guided botanical hikes, a natural cosmetics workshop, and a regional gastronomic market with typical Deutschnonsberg products. At participating restaurants — including Zum Hirschen, Gasthof Zur Sonne, and Gasthaus Waldrast — the dandelion was the star of creative dishes, from herb soups and risottos to dandelion honey desserts.
The Deutschnonsberg can be reached by car from the Val di Non (A22 motorway exit at San Michele all'Adige/Mezzocorona) by driving up towards Fondo and continuing to Senale-San Felice, Proveis, and Lauregno; from Merano, it is accessible via the Val d'Ultimo and the Gampenjoch (Passo delle Palade).

Bring comfortable shoes for the guided botanical hikes and check the calendar of farmers' markets and workshops in advance, as they take place on specific days of the festival.
