Two days dedicated to the wild herbs of the Monti Dauni in Ascoli Satriano
In Ascoli Satriano, a village in the Monti Dauni area of Foggia province, the lampascione and wild asparagus are more than just ingredients: they are a piece of peasant identity. The lampascione (scientific name Leopoldia comosa, formerly Muscari comosum) is a small, slightly bitter bulb that grows wild in the fallow lands of the Tavoliere and the Daunian hills, recognized as one of Puglia's Traditional Agri-food Products (PAT). Wild asparagus, more slender and flavorful than the cultivated variety, sprouts in spring along hedgerows and at the foot of wild pear trees. Both tell a story of humble cuisine rooted in foraging and family recipes passed down through generations.
Foraging for wild herbs is an ancient ritual in Ascoli Satriano: heading out to the fields during spring days, particularly around Easter Monday at the Boschetto, was once a staple of the farming calendar. This tradition has given rise to a repertoire of simple, recognizable dishes: wild asparagus omelets, and lampascioni preserved in oil, sweet-and-sour, or roasted under hot ashes. The festival brings this gastronomic heritage back to the forefront, which is becoming rarer today as traditional fallow lands have largely disappeared from the landscape.
The event transforms the center of Ascoli Satriano into a culinary trail. In its various editions, the festival has featured:
The festival is organized by the APS Ascoli Satriano – Cultura, Tradizioni e Fantasia. The first edition took place in 2024 in the rural setting of Borgo San Carlo, a hamlet of Ascoli Satriano; the second edition, in 2025, was held in the heart of the town, a sign of the growing interest in the event. Despite being a recent addition, the festival has already carved out a place in the calendar of food and wine events in the Province of Foggia and the Monti Dauni, promoting products that were at risk of being forgotten.
Visitors to the festival will also discover a charming village: Ascoli Satriano, in the hinterland of northern Puglia, houses a rich Daunian archaeological heritage and overlooks the rolling landscape of the Monti Dauni. Combining a gastronomic discovery with a walk through the historic center is the best way to experience the event as a true immersion into local culture.
For 2026, the Lampascione and Wild Asparagus Festival chose a new spot on the calendar, moving to the beginning of summer: Saturday, June 20 and Sunday, June 21, 2026, with an expansion to two days compared to the single day of previous editions.
The event, organized by the APS Ascoli Satriano – Cultura, Tradizioni e Fantasia, confirmed its vocation: bringing food stalls dedicated to lampascione and wild asparagus to the square in Ascoli Satriano, along with typical products of the Daunian territory and moments of folk entertainment.
The dates for the 2026 edition (June 20 and 21) are confirmed by the official event calendar of the Municipality of Ascoli Satriano. The detailed program with stalls, times, and musical appointments is distributed by the organizers on the channels of the Municipality and the APS Ascoli Satriano – Cultura, Tradizioni e Fantasia.
In continuity with previous editions, the festival offers food stalls based on lampascione and wild asparagus, tastings of typical products of the Monti Dauni, and folk music in the square.
