The Historical Cavalcade is the most iconic event of Bovino, a charming medieval village in the Monti Dauni, in the Province of Foggia, Puglia. Part of the Agosto Bovinese calendar, the event celebrates the town's patron saint, the Madonna di Valleverde, with a grand costume re-enactment that draws thousands of visitors to the historic center every year, tripling the town's population during the festivities.
The tradition dates back to 1266, when the Virgin is said to have appeared to a woodcutter named Niccolò in the Mengaga woods: that event sparked the cult and led to the construction of the Santuario di Valleverde. In 1534, the lord Marino Boffa obtained from Queen Joanna II of Naples the privilege of holding a nine-day fair each year, while the diocesan synod of 1631 set August 29th as the feast day commemorating the sanctuary's consecration. The Historical Cavalcade, in its current form, has been held continuously for over 160 years.
The procession starts at the town entrance, travels along the main street, and climbs towards the Ducal Castle and the Cathedral, where the Archbishop blesses the knights. The parade is opened by the symbolic ritual of the offering of the oil by a municipality from the ancient diocese. They are followed by civil, military, and religious authorities from neighboring towns, the Province, and the ancient diocese, each with their own banner, and living tableaux in period costumes that retrace the highlights of Bovino's history:
The Cavalcade is the highlight of a full month of events: throughout August, the Municipality of Bovino offers cultural events, shows, food festivals, and exhibitions, with highlights such as the dialect poetry competition and live music performances accompanying the patronal feast days, from August 28th to 30th. It is the perfect opportunity to discover one of the most beautiful villages in the Capitanata region, among stone alleys, the castle, and the gastronomy of the Monti Dauni.
Bovino is located in the Monti Dauni, in the Province of Foggia. By car, it can be reached via the A16 Naples-Canosa motorway (Candela exit) or the SS90 state road. The Bovino-Deliceto railway station is on the Foggia-Benevento line, with bus connections to the historic center.
The Historical Cavalcade and the Agosto Bovinese events take place in the streets and squares of the historic center and are free of charge. It is recommended to arrive early on August 29th to watch the procession pass along the main street.
The village is very crowded during the festival days: it is best to park in the outer areas and walk to the center. For updated information on dates and the program, please contact the Pro Loco Bovino.
