Three days of faith, tradition, and entertainment in the heart of the Daunian Subappennino

In the heart of the Daunian Subappennino, nestled between the wheat fields of the Tavoliere and the rolling foothills of the Apennines, the town of Castelluccio dei Sauri (Foggia Province, Puglia) celebrates its Patronal Feast in honor of the Most Holy Savior and the Madonna delle Grazie every summer. It is the most cherished event of the year, drawing back residents who have moved away and families from across Italy, blending deep religious devotion with the joy of community gathering in the town square.
The religious core of the festival traditionally takes place between August 6th and 7th. On August 6th, the solemn feast day, High Mass is celebrated, followed by the procession of the statue of the Most Holy Savior through the main streets of the historic center. The following day, after the service, the procession of the painting of the Madonna delle Grazie takes place—a highly valuable work that some scholars date back to the 16th century, attributing it to a student of Raphael's workshop. Historically, the feast of the Madonna delle Grazie was held on August 17th, 18th, and 19th, marking the end of the wheat harvest: an ancient link between the agricultural calendar and the life of this Daunian village.
Alongside the sacred rites, the municipal Department of Tourism and Entertainment, in collaboration with the Pro Loco and the Patronal Feast Committee, organizes a rich program of events: the patronal fair, concerts, comedy shows, traditional games, dance evenings, food stalls featuring the flavors of the Daunia region, and a highly anticipated final fireworks display. The festival is part of the town's broader summer calendar, known as Sauri Summer, which brings music, sports tournaments, and cultural events to Castelluccio dei Sauri between July and September.
Castelluccio dei Sauri, with just under two thousand inhabitants and located about twenty kilometers from Foggia, is an ideal starting point for exploring the Daunian Subappennino, its wines, local products, and neighboring villages like Troia, Deliceto, and Ordona. Experiencing the Patronal Feast means connecting with the authentic soul of this land: the bustling square, the festive lights, the aroma of the stalls, and the thunderous roar of the fireworks that greet the return of the patron saints to the church.
The Municipality of Castelluccio dei Sauri, together with the Pro Loco and the Patronal Feast Committee, has not yet published the official dates and the program for the 2026 edition of the Patronal Feast of San Salvatore and the Madonna delle Grazie. According to tradition, the festival is held in early August and includes solemn masses, the procession of the statue of the Most Holy Savior, the procession of the painting of the Madonna delle Grazie, a fair, concerts, cabaret, and a concluding fireworks display. The detailed program will be communicated by the organizers in the weeks leading up to the event.
