The festival in Torremaggiore celebrating the rural culture of the Capitanata region
Every year at the end of August, Torremaggiore—a town in the Alto Tavoliere area of Foggia, in the heart of the Capitanata—dedicates an entire event to its rural soul. The Eco Festa Contadina was created to preserve the memory of the farming world that for centuries has shaped the landscape, economy, and cuisine of this corner of northern Puglia, amidst vast wheat fields, olive groves, and vineyards.
Promoted by the Confraternita Misericordie di Torremaggiore with the patronage and support of the Municipality of Torremaggiore and the Department of Agriculture, the festival takes place in Piazzale Palma Piacquaddio, inside the municipal pine forest, a green space that transforms for the occasion into a large village courtyard where the community gathers.
The gastronomic heart of the event is the pancotto competition, the quintessential humble dish of the Torremaggiore tradition: stale bread cooked with wild greens, olive oil, and chili pepper, a symbol of a cuisine born from resourcefulness and simplicity. Alongside the cooking challenge, stalls offer tastings of local products—from traditional rural recipes to desserts and land-grown goods like 'mostocotto'—all paired with local wines.
The Eco Festa Contadina also serves as a stage for folk and Mediterranean-rooted music. Each edition pairs local singers and folk groups from the Gargano area with a major national guest: over the years, artists such as Eugenio Bennato, a champion of Southern folk music, and Enzo Avitabile with his Bottari di Portico, ambassadors of Campanian and Mediterranean ethnic sounds, have performed. The evening concerts, with free admission, attract large crowds even from neighboring towns.
The Eco Festa Contadina is part of the Torrestate summer program, a long series of events that brings Torremaggiore to life from late June to early September with music, open-air cinema, theater, and historical re-enactments linked to Frederick II of Swabia and the ancient city of Castel Fiorentino. The rural festival represents one of the most iconic and heartfelt moments of the season, blending food and wine, rural traditions, and great live music.
The eleventh edition of the Eco Festa Contadina returns to Torremaggiore on Friday, August 28th and Saturday, August 29th, 2026, in Piazzale Palma Piacquaddio. As per tradition, the event is organized by the Confraternita Misericordie di Torremaggiore with the support of the Municipality and the Department of Agriculture, and is part of the Torrestate 2026 summer program.
The two evenings offer tastings of traditional rural dishes, the historic pancotto competition, and folk music performances. The most anticipated moment is the closing concert on Saturday, August 29th, with Enzo Avitabile and the Bottari di Portico, among the most famous interpreters of ethnic and Mediterranean sounds in Southern Italy.
The detailed program with times and local artists for each evening is released by the organizers in the weeks leading up to the event.
The festival is held in Piazzale Palma Piacquaddio, inside the municipal pine forest of Torremaggiore (FG), in Puglia.
By car: Torremaggiore can be reached via the SS16 road and the Poggio Imperiale/San Severo exit on the A14 motorway, then continuing toward the Alto Tavoliere. The most convenient train station is San Severo, on the Adriatic line, which is connected to Torremaggiore by local bus services.
Admission is free of charge. The evenings generally begin in the early evening, starting at 7:00 PM, with tastings, stalls, and musical performances continuing until late at night.
