The Moena stop of the Trentino high-altitude music festival
In the town of Moena, the pearl of the Val di Fassa in the province of Trento, the Teatro Navalge hosts the local event of I Suoni delle Dolomiti, the high-altitude music festival that brings the mountains of Trentino-Alto Adige to life every summer. Conceived in 1995 by journalist Paolo Manfrini and currently curated by Trentino Marketing, the festival features exceptional artistic direction by cellist Mario Brunello.
The philosophy of I Suoni delle Dolomiti is unique in the Italian landscape: it eschews large stages and traditional concert infrastructure to bring music to places where silence usually reigns. The concerts are held in mountain huts, alpine dairies, clearings, and on peaks reachable only on foot, along trails of varying difficulty traversed together by the audience and musicians. Here, "silence becomes listening, and walking becomes sharing": the listening experience merges with that of high-altitude hiking. Almost all concerts are free (with the exception of the Trekking dei Suoni), and several evenings are designed for accessibility and inclusion.
Moena is one of the key landmarks of the festival in the Val di Fassa. The Teatro Navalge, the town's cultural venue, hosts indoor events, while the surrounding high-altitude locations—such as the Gardeccia basin at the foot of the Catinaccio—host open-air concerts. Around Moena, the event weaves together great international music, alpine tradition, and the extraordinary backdrop of the Dolomites, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Each edition offers a program of concerts ranging from classical music to jazz, and from singer-songwriter performances to projects that bridge music and mountaineering. The audience is invited not only to listen but to live an immersive experience in the landscape, where the effort of the hike and the beauty of the peaks become an integral part of the show. Environmental awareness and sustainable tourism are among the festival's founding values.
For the 31st edition of I Suoni delle Dolomiti (August 24 – October 3, 2026), the town of Moena is the protagonist of the "Vertical Music" project, which brings together two seemingly distant worlds: music and climbing. As the festival states, "music and climbing share a language made of listening, rhythm, and presence."
On September 29, 2026, at 8:45 PM, at the Teatro Navalge in Moena, world-renowned mountaineer Alexander Huber (also a pianist), pianist and musicologist Chiara Schmidt, actor and writer Giuseppe Cederna, and the Ensemble Cortlys take the stage. Together, they guide the audience through a story that weaves art and mountaineering, between music and words. The concert is free and accessible to people with disabilities.
The project continues on October 1 at 2:00 PM in Gardeccia, at the foot of the Catinaccio, where Chiara Schmidt, Giuseppe Cederna, and the Ensemble Cortlys bring music and words among the peaks, in the place where the encounter between art and climbing finds its full expression.
Moena can be reached by car via the SS48 Dolomite road; the nearest motorway exit is Ora/Egna (A22 Brennero motorway), from which you continue along the Val di Fassa. By train, the reference stations are Trento or Bolzano, with onward travel via Trentino Trasporti bus lines toward the Val di Fassa.
Most concerts are free to attend. For information and reservations: APT Val di Fassa, tel. +39 0462 609500 — official website isuonidelledolomiti.it and fassa.com.
For high-altitude concerts, mountain clothing including trekking shoes, a windbreaker, and water is essential. Always check weather conditions and trail travel times before setting off.
