About Fiè Larder

Throughout October, the Völser Kuchlkastl (Fiè Larder) transforms the restaurants and hotels of Fiè allo Sciliar, nestled at the foot of the Sciliar massif, into a stage for South Tyrolean culinary excellence. Established in 1978, this food and wine festival invites local chefs to reinterpret traditional peasant recipes with a modern twist, using local beef, game, alpine mushrooms, mountain herbs, and garden-fresh produce. It is an authentic journey into the cuisine of the Dolomites, recognized far beyond the borders of South Tyrol.

A month of flavors at the foot of the Sciliar

Every year in October, the small town of Fiè allo Sciliar/Völs am Schlern, in the province of Bolzano, becomes the capital of South Tyrolean taste thanks to the Völser Kuchlkastl, or Fiè Larder. For an entire month, the town's restaurants and hotels, located at the foot of the Sciliar and at the gateway to the Alpe di Siusi, offer special menus dedicated to traditional South Tyrolean cuisine, revisited with creativity.

A tradition born in 1978

The event has its roots in 1978, when a young innkeeper from Fiè had the idea to create, together with his colleagues, a "gastronomic October" to extend the season and showcase local flavors. Since then, the initiative has grown year after year, becoming a highly anticipated event known well beyond the borders of South Tyrol. In 2026, the Völser Kuchlkastl celebrates its 48th edition.

Peasant recipes with a contemporary twist

The common thread of the festival is the rediscovery of old mountain recipes, reinterpreted and refined by local restaurateurs. The foundation lies in seasonal, zero-kilometer products: beef from Fiè, game, and vegetables and fruits from local gardens. Among the specialties you can savor during the month:

  • Brennsuppe, the traditional toasted peasant soup;
  • Schlutzkrapfen, the typical South Tyrolean ravioli;
  • buckwheat pasta and tagliatelle;
  • lamb and game dishes;
  • alpine mushrooms, mountain herbs, and seasonal vegetables.

How it works

The Völser Kuchlkastl does not take place in a single venue: individual participating establishments offer a dedicated menu in their own kitchens throughout the month of October. Restaurants and hotels that have participated over the years include Restaurant Presulis, Gasthof Zum Schlern, Hotel Heubad, Restaurant Pitschlmann, Hotel Rose-Wenzer, Hotel Gasthof Kircher, Restaurant Schönblick, and Umser Mühlele. Reservations directly with the individual establishments are recommended.

Taste and landscape

Experiencing the Völser Kuchlkastl means combining the pleasure of dining with the beauty of the Dolomite autumn: the colors of the forest, the crisp mountain air, and the view of the Sciliar frame an experience where the cuisine becomes an authentic expression of the identity of Fiè allo Sciliar and all of South Tyrol.
