Secular rites of the Passion in the Gargano village of love
In Vico del Gargano, one of the most beautiful villages in Italy perched among olive groves and the Umbra Forest in the province of Foggia, Holy Week is much more than a religious celebration: it is the moment when the entire community reconnects with its roots. Throughout the week leading up to Easter, the medieval historic center, with its narrow alleys and stone arches, transforms into an open-air theater of faith, marked by ancient chants and the slow pace of the processions.
The beating heart of the rites are the five Confraternities of Vico, which have guarded and passed down these traditions for centuries:
It is the brothers, with their habits and chants, who give face and voice to the days of the Triduum, in an interweaving of popular devotion and collective memory.
The journey begins with the Office of Darkness on Holy Wednesday, a moment of reflection and prayer. On Holy Thursday, the "In Coena Domini" Mass is celebrated in all churches, followed by the "Lament of the Madonna" in the Mother Church and the evocative Office of Darkness sung by the voices of the Confraternities. On Good Friday, from the early hours of the morning, the penitential processions take "the Madonnas" to visit the Blessed Sacrament in the twelve churches of the town, chanting Psalm 50, the famous Miserere, and then returning with the singing of the "Pange lingua gloriosi". In the afternoon, the Liturgy of the Passion is celebrated, locally called "Messa Pazza" (Crazy Mass), followed by the Three Hours of Agony dedicated to the last words of Christ.
The most anticipated and moving moment is the Good Friday evening procession, when all the Confraternities gather and walk together through the village to the Calvary, set up in the Carmine district, where five symbolic crosses are raised. It is here that the Miserere is sung in unison and in its entirety, enveloping the houses and squares in an atmosphere of intense emotion. The Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday, with the Blessing of Fire and Water, closes the journey, opening to the joy of the Resurrection.
Known as "the village of love" due to the cult of its patron saint, Saint Valentine, Vico del Gargano offers visitors, in addition to the Easter rites, one of the most fascinating historic centers in Puglia. Attending Holy Week means coming into contact with an authentic tradition, far from any tourist artifice, still deeply experienced by the Gargano population.
The 2026 Holy Week in Vico del Gargano followed the rich calendar of Passion rites handed down by the ancient Confraternities. From the Office of Darkness on Holy Wednesday to the Easter Vigil on Saturday, the Gargano village experienced four days of intense participation, culminating in the great evening procession on Good Friday towards the Calvary in the Carmine district, with the Miserere sung in unison.
Vico del Gargano can be reached by car from the A14 motorway (Poggio Imperiale or San Severo exit) following signs for the Gargano; the nearest train station is served by the Ferrovie del Gargano. The rites take place in the historic center, which is accessible only on foot.
The rites follow the liturgical calendar: from Holy Wednesday to Holy Saturday, with the culmination on Good Friday.
All celebrations and processions are free to attend. Modest clothing and respectful behavior are recommended during the rites.
