The folk festival of the Schützenkompanie Terlan Gericht Neuhaus
The Hoametfescht is the folk festival (Volksfest) that brings the village of Terlano/Terlan to life every summer. Located in the wine-growing region of the Oltradige in the Province of Bolzano, Trentino-Alto Adige, the name—in the South Tyrolean dialect—means "home festival" or "village festival." It is the event that unites the local community around its roots, music, and conviviality. It is traditionally held on the first or second weekend of August at the Festplatz along Jakobistraße.
The event is organized by the Schützenkompanie Terlan Gericht Neuhaus, the Terlano Schützen company, which is part of the Südtiroler Schützenbund. The Schützen are the historic marksmen companies of the Tyrolean area, guardians of the identity, customs, and folk culture of South Tyrol. The Hoametfescht was born precisely as a moment of gathering and self-funding for this association, which is deeply rooted in the village's fabric.
The heart of the festival is live music: South Tyrolean folk and dance bands take the stage, keeping the evenings lively until late. There is no shortage of traditional cuisine (the "Kuchl"), a wine cellar (the "Weinkeller") featuring labels from the renowned Terlano territory, and a rich array of traditional games for both adults and children. The organizers encourage visitors to attend in traditional costume, with Dirndl and Lederhosen, for a genuinely South Tyrolean atmosphere.
Terlano is famous throughout South Tyrol for its white wines, particularly the Terlano DOC, and for its leaning bell tower. The Hoametfescht offers the ideal opportunity to discover the village and its hospitality in an alpine setting just a few kilometers from Bolzano. It is an authentic festival, far from the major tourist circuits, where tradition is still alive and widely celebrated.
The 2026 edition of the Hoametfescht takes place on Friday, August 7, and Saturday, August 8 in Terlano/Terlan, at the Festplatz along Jakobistraße. The festival opens on Friday at 7:00 PM with a performance by the group Vollbluet, while Saturday's opening is at 5:00 PM, with musical entertainment provided by Die Jungen Pseirer starting at 6:30 PM.
As per tradition, there will be plenty of traditional South Tyrolean cuisine, the Terlano wine cellar, and traditional games. The organizers invite visitors to wear Dirndl and Lederhosen to fully experience the festival atmosphere.
Terlano/Terlan is located on the road between Bolzano and Merano (SS38), about 10 km from Bolzano. By train, the Terlano-Andriano station is on the Bolzano-Merano line. The festival takes place at the Festplatz along Jakobistraße/Via San Giacomo.
