The Sacred Heart of Jesus procession through the streets of Partschins, accompanied by the Musikkapelle Partschins
The Herz-Jesu-Prozession, or Sacred Heart of Jesus procession, is one of the most deeply rooted traditions in the community of Partschins, a village in the Burggrafenamt district of Bolzano, in the heart of South Tyrol. Every year, on the Sunday dedicated to the Sacred Heart, the village gathers for a ritual that blends religious devotion with a strong Tyrolean cultural identity.
The event stems from a historic vow: in 1796, facing the threat of Napoleonic troops at the region's borders, the Tyrolean Estates gathered in Bolzano and, at the suggestion of Abbot Sebastian Stöckl of Stams, decided to entrust Tyrol to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and renew this consecration every year. Since then, Herz-Jesu-Sonntag (Sacred Heart Sunday) has been celebrated throughout South Tyrol with solemn processions and, in the evening, with the famous Herz-Jesu-Feuer—the Sacred Heart bonfires lit on the mountains to form crosses, hearts, and other luminous symbols visible in the night.
In Partschins, the day begins with Holy Mass at 08:30, followed around 09:15 by the procession through the historic center of the village, featuring the faithful, traditional groups, and the Musikkapelle Partschins, the local brass band. At the end of the procession, around 10:00, the band performs a short concert (Standkonzert) in the church square, a convivial moment that brings the entire community together.
As throughout South Tyrol, the celebration does not end in the morning: at nightfall, the slopes around Partschins ignite with the Sacred Heart bonfires, one of the most evocative images of the South Tyrolean summer. The flames, arranged to form hearts and crosses on the ridges, symbolically renew the vow of 1796 and create a unique atmosphere throughout the valley.
More than just a tourist event, the Herz-Jesu-Prozession is a living tradition deeply felt by the residents of Partschins. Visitors to the town on this day witness an authentic manifestation of Tyrolean identity, where brass band music, popular faith, and the alpine landscape merge into an experience deeply tied to the territory of the province of Bolzano and the entire Trentino-Alto Adige region.
