The night of the alpine demons in the heart of the Val Venosta

The Naturno Krampus Parade (in German Krampusumzug Naturns) is one of the most anticipated winter events in the Val Venosta. Every year, around the time of the Saint Nicholas feast, the streets of the center of Naturno, in the Province of Bolzano (Trentino-Alto Adige), transform into the stage for an ancient alpine tradition: the parade of the Krampus, the demonic creatures that, according to South Tyrolean folklore, accompany Saint Nicholas to punish disobedient children.
With their artistic masks, often hand-carved from wood and passed down through generations, their imposing horns, and thick furs, the Krampus embody the dark forces of winter. Armed with willow switches, soot, cowbells, and noisy chains, they parade through the crowd, creating an infernal racket and an atmosphere that is as frightening as it is fascinating. The deep meaning of the ritual, however, remains bright: in the end, the Krampus must obey Saint Nicholas, symbolizing the victory of good over evil.
The parade kicks off in the late afternoon from the Hirschen parking lot, in the Compaccio (Kompatsch) district, and travels along the main street of the town to the center. In Town Hall Square (Piazza del Municipio), the event concludes with an after-show featuring music and sounds, where the public can gather to escape the cold. Admission is free, but the experience requires caution: the Krampus interact with spectators, and it is advisable to keep a safe distance, especially with small children.
The event is organized by the Krampus-Verein Naturns, the Naturno Krampus association refounded in 2006 and now composed of about 70 members. The group preserves and renews this centuries-old custom every year, taking care of the costumes, masks, and the organization of the parade, which attracts guests and groups from all over South Tyrol and the nearby Tyrol region.
The Naturno parade is part of a rich calendar of events linked to the Krampus that, during the Advent period, enliven numerous locations in South Tyrol such as Dobbiaco, Sesto, Vipiteno, Silandro, and Lana. In Naturno, however, the ritual takes on a particularly spectacular and heartfelt character, becoming one of the highlights of the town's winter season and a unique opportunity to immerse oneself in the authentic folklore of the South Tyrolean valleys.
The Naturno Krampus Parade (Krampusumzug Naturns) is expected to return in 2026, organized by the Krampus-Verein Naturns in the municipality of Naturno, in the Province of Bolzano. At the moment, the official dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been published: following tradition, the parade should take place around the time of the Saint Nicholas feast, at the beginning of December. The detailed program, including times and the route, will be announced by the association closer to the event. For updated information, it is advisable to contact the Krampus-Verein Naturns or the local tourist office.
Naturno is located in the Val Venosta, along the Val Venosta state road (SS38), about 15 km from Merano. By train, the Naturno station is served by the Merano-Malles line. There are ample parking spaces in the town; on the evenings of the parade, it is advisable to arrive early due to the large influx of visitors.
Free entry. The event is family-friendly but potentially frightening for small children: it is recommended to maintain a safe distance from the performers.
