A re-enactment of Abruzzo's rural heritage in Castiglione a Casauria
The Harvest and Threshing Festival is one of the most cherished summer events in Castiglione a Casauria, a small town in the province of Pescara overlooking the Pescara River valley in Abruzzo. The event, organized by the APS L'Agricoltura de na vote association ("farming of the past"), is dedicated to preserving and passing down the memory of the agricultural world that defined local life for centuries, amidst golden wheat, sheaves, and long days of hard work in the fields.
The event takes place along the Tratturo and in the town's industrial area, where a genuine historical setting is reconstructed. The heart of the festival is the re-enactment of the harvest and threshing: visitors can witness manual wheat harvesting, the gathering of manuppi (sheaves), and the use of antique farming equipment and vintage tractors that demonstrate how straw was separated from grain, just as it was done in the Abruzzo countryside before mechanization.
The festival also features a rich culinary offering, with stalls serving traditional dishes: arrosticini, porchetta, fried pizzas, bread with olive oil, bread with tomatoes, and other local specialties, all paired with regional wines. It is the perfect opportunity to discover the genuine flavors of the Pescara hinterland in a festive, popular atmosphere.
More than just a food festival, the Harvest and Threshing Festival represents a moment of strong identity for the community of Castiglione a Casauria and the entire middle Pescara valley. The re-enactment unites different generations around the ancient gestures of field work, in a territory rich in history dominated by the nearby Abbey of San Clemente a Casauria, one of the most important Romanesque monuments in Abruzzo.
The 9th edition of the Harvest and Threshing Festival will be held in Castiglione a Casauria on July 11 and 12, 2026, organized by the APS L'Agricoltura de na vote. Along the Tratturo and in the town's industrial area, the re-enactment of wheat harvesting and threshing will take place using ancient agricultural tools and vintage tractors.
The program includes the re-enactment of field work, traditional games, music, and folk dances, in addition to food stalls serving arrosticini, porchetta, fried pizzas, bread with oil, and other Abruzzo specialties. Free admission.
