About Farro Festival

Every August, during the feast of Saint Lawrence, Abbateggio celebrates its most iconic product: farro, an ancient grain rediscovered among the seeds of local farming families. In the heart of the historic center of this small village in the Pescara province—one of Italy's most beautiful villages nestled on the slopes of the Majella National Park—the Farro Festival combines tastings of traditional soups and dishes, arrosticini, cheeses, and Abruzzo wines with live music evenings. A community event, organized by the Pro Loco, that tells the story of a grain and the people who have cultivated it for generations.

The Farro Festival, the gastronomic heart of Abbateggio

The Farro Festival is the most important and highly anticipated event in Abbateggio, a small town in the Province of Pescara included among the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy. It is held every year in August, in the heart of the town's historic center, to coincide with the feast of the patron saint Saint Lawrence (August 10). For over thirty years, the community has come together to celebrate the product that made Abbateggio famous as the "farro village": an ancient grain, forgotten elsewhere for centuries and supplanted by modern wheat, but which survived here and was rediscovered among the seeds of local farming families.

An ancient grain takes center stage

Farro is the true star of the festival. Born from the efforts of the Pro Loco and small local producers to reintroduce this grain into contemporary diets, it is now at the center of a supply chain that enhances the agricultural biodiversity of the Majella. During the festival evenings, visitors can taste typical dishes prepared with farro—from classic soups to desserts—accompanied by other specialties of Abruzzo cuisine.

  • Traditional peasant-style farro soups and stews
  • Abruzzo arrosticini, cheeses, and cured meats
  • Farro-based desserts prepared by the local women
  • Local wines and typical regional products

Music, conviviality, and tradition

The Farro Festival is not just about gastronomy: every evening the village comes alive with concerts and live performances, with a varied and engaging musical program that accompanies the tastings until late at night. Alongside the food and wine stands, there is space for the sale of local products, festive moments, and the authentic atmosphere of a mountain village that opens its streets to visitors.

Abbateggio and the Majella National Park

The festival is also an opportunity to discover Abbateggio and its territory, nestled on the northern slopes of the Majella National Park, in Abruzzo. In the historic center, you will find the mother church of San Lorenzo Martire, while in the nearby Valle Giumentina, you can see the tholos, ancient dry-stone structures that bear witness to the agro-pastoral life of the area. Participating in the Farro Festival means experiencing a piece of Abruzzo tradition, amidst genuine flavors, mountain landscapes, and the hospitality of a small community.
