The district challenge in the heart of Alanno's summer
In the heart of summer, the small town of Alanno, nestled on the hills of the Pescara Valley in the hinterland of the Pescara province, lights up with the Palio delle Contrade, one of the most heartfelt and popular events of the year. For three days in July, the entire town is ideally divided into its districts, living a weekend of challenges, games, and shared celebration.
The Palio pits the districts of Alanno against each other: the Centro Urbano (town center), Stazione, and Oratorio. Each district fields its own teams in a series of trials that combine strength, cunning, and team spirit. The competitions are inspired by the tradition of Abruzzo folk games and generally include:
The points earned each day contribute to the final assignment of the Palio, a coveted trophy that the winning district proudly keeps until the following edition.
More than just a competition, the Palio delle Contrade is a moment of gathering for the entire Alanno community. The streets and squares of the village fill with colors, flags, and cheering, while food stalls and refreshment points accompany the evenings with the flavors of Abruzzo cuisine. It is an opportunity to rediscover the bond with the territory and strengthen neighborhood ties in a climate of joy and healthy rivalry.
The Palio is part of a rich summer calendar that the Municipality of Alanno, in Abruzzo, offers between June and September: gastronomic festivals, concerts, shows, and re-enactments of ancient farming traditions, such as grain harvesting and threshing. In this context, the Palio represents one of the key events, capable of attracting residents, former residents, and emigrants who return to the town specifically for the festival.
Those who visit Alanno during the Palio discover the authentic soul of a village in the Pescara hinterland: living traditions, genuine hospitality, and the joy of a community coming together. It is an ideal experience for those seeking the most authentic side of Abruzzo, far from mass tourism circuits and close to the spirit of its popular festivals.
From July 9th to 11th, 2026, Alanno will be colored by the 12th Palio delle Contrade, organized by the Municipality of Alanno with the collaboration of Avis. The three districts of the town—Alanno Centro Urbano, Stazione, and Oratorio—will compete in the usual program of games and trials, for one of the most anticipated events of the Alanno summer.
The Palio is part of a weekend full of events: in the preceding days, on July 5th, the Oratorio delle Grazie will host a re-enactment of the ancient traditions of grain harvesting and threshing, testifying to the town's strong bond with its farming roots.
Event spread over three days (July 9-11, 2026) with games and challenges between the districts of Alanno Centro Urbano, Stazione, and Oratorio. The detailed program with times and trials will be released by the Municipality of Alanno on its social channels in the days leading up to the event.
Alanno is located in the middle Pescara Valley, in the province of Pescara. By car, it can be reached via the A25 motorway (Alanno-Scafa or Torre de' Passeri exits) and the state road that follows the Pescara River. The Alanno train station, on the Rome-Pescara line, connects the town to the main centers of Abruzzo.
The event takes place in the town's public spaces and access is generally free. For the detailed program and updated times, it is recommended to check the social media channels of the Municipality of Alanno.
Summer evenings on the hills can be cool: it is useful to bring a light jacket. Ample space is dedicated to food stalls featuring Abruzzo specialties.
