The religious and folk festival in the Madonnella district of Alanno
The Madonna del Carmine Festival is one of the most anticipated summer events in Madonnella, a small hamlet in the municipality of Alanno, located in the province of Pescara, in the heart of Abruzzo. Every year in mid-July, the community gathers to celebrate the Virgin of Mount Carmel, one of the most widespread Marian devotions in Italy, combining religious reflection with the convivial and festive atmosphere typical of Abruzzo's patronal feasts.
The cult of the Madonna del Carmine is rooted in the Carmelite tradition and is celebrated throughout Italy around July 16th, the day dedicated to the Blessed Virgin of Mount Carmel. In Madonnella, the festival retains its deeply religious character: the Holy Mass and the solemn procession with the image of the Madonna through the streets of the hamlet represent the most intense and well-attended moment, drawing not only the inhabitants of Alanno but also the faithful from neighboring towns.
The more popular side of the event develops around the liturgical appointments. The evenings in Madonnella come alive with live music, entertainment for families and children, food stalls where you can savor local traditional dishes, and moments of social interaction that involve the entire community. It is an opportunity to rediscover the value of coming together, in a simple and authentic atmosphere that characterizes the festivals of small Abruzzo villages.
The municipality of Alanno is nestled among the hills of the Val Pescara, in an area rich in history and spirituality. A few kilometers from the center lies the famous Sanctuary of Santa Maria delle Grazie, built at the end of the 15th century on the site of a traditional Marian apparition, a testament to the town's long-standing devotion. The Madonna del Carmine Festival is part of a busy calendar of summer events that, from June to September, animate Alanno and its hamlets with food festivals, theatrical performances, concerts, and patronal feasts.
The 2026 Madonna del Carmine Festival takes place in the Madonnella district, in Alanno (PE), on Saturday, July 18th, and Sunday, July 19th, 2026.
