The Easter festival celebrating the traditional Bagheria pastry across Corso Umberto, Piazza Palagonia, and Villa Butera
In the heart of Sicily, in Bagheria (Metropolitan City of Palermo), the Happy Easter & pupu cu l'ova event transforms the city center into a widespread celebration dedicated to one of the most beloved symbols of local Easter tradition: the pupu cu l'ova, a pastry shaped like a figure or doll that holds an egg inside, prepared throughout Sicily during the Easter season.
The event brings several iconic city landmarks to life: Piazza Palagonia, Corso Umberto I, and the historic Villa Butera, with the afternoon parade departing from Piazza Garibaldi. Along the main street, characteristic "Easter trees" are set up, adorned with oranges that reflect the citrus-growing heritage of the Piana.
The project stems from the collaboration between the LLL4EU association, founded and chaired by Chiara Audia, and the Slow Food Convivium of Bagheria, under the patronage of the Municipality of Bagheria. Numerous local entities revolve around the initiative: the Carducci-Gramsci, Scianna-Cirincione, and Ignazio Buttitta comprehensive institutes, the Renato Guttuso Art High School, the Don Luigi Sturzo and Salvo D'Acquisto high schools, as well as associations such as Singcily Local Group, La Piana d'Or, the APO Sicilia Consortium, and the Samot association.
The gastronomic heart of the day consists of cooking shows and masterclasses with master bakers and pastry chefs, who guide students in preparing the pupu cu l'ova, revealing the secrets of a recipe passed down from generation to generation.
The stated goal of the event is to raise awareness among new generations about preserving historical memory and local identity, starting with a traditional product like the pupu cu l'ova. The festival thus weaves together gastronomy, popular culture, education, and tradition, offering residents and visitors an authentic opportunity to discover Easter in Bagheria.
The third edition of Happy Easter & pupu cu l'ova was held in Bagheria on Monday, March 30, 2026, confirming the formula that blends gastronomy, education, and tradition. Coordinated by Chiara Audia's LLL4EU association together with the Slow Food Convivium of Bagheria, under the patronage of the Municipality, the day involved numerous schools, local associations, and local master bakers.
Among the novelties of this edition, the masterclasses dedicated to preparing the pastry were accompanied by the presence of journalists Mario Liberto and Michele Balistreri and pastry chef Giovanni La Rosa, while the drummer parade enlivened the route from Piazza Garibaldi to Villa Butera.
The event takes place in the center of Bagheria (Metropolitan City of Palermo): Piazza Palagonia, Corso Umberto I, and Villa Butera, with the parade starting from Piazza Garibaldi.
By train: Bagheria is served by the PalermoโMessina railway line, with the station just a few minutes from the center. By car: from the A19 PalermoโCatania motorway, take the Bagheria exit. It takes about 20-30 minutes from Palermo.
The event, which has a strong educational and cultural focus, takes place in the city's public spaces and is free to attend.
