The celebration of the famous Ficarazzi-style sfincione, featuring the red version with tuma cheese, anchovies, and tomato
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Ficarazzi Sfincione Festival is an annual celebration of the signature culinary product of this small town in the Metropolitan City of Palermo, Sicily. While sfincione is one of the most beloved symbols of Palermo street food, in Ficarazzi it takes on a unique character: the so-called red variant, a fluffy leavened bread base topped with tomato sauce, onions, salted anchovies, oregano, and tuma (or caciocavallo) cheese, perfected over time by the town's skilled bakers to make it truly one-of-a-kind.
The event has its roots in the 1990s, when the local Pro Loco suggested that the municipal administration promote this artisanal product, which had become a staple of the area. Since then, the festival has grown into a permanent fixture of the Ficarazzi autumn, often integrated into the broader Vivi Ficarazzi initiative and linked to the festivities in honor of the Madonna del Rosario, which take place on the first weekend of October.
For the occasion, the historic center is transformed: stalls from local bakeries and pizzerias are set up along the streets and squares, offering the chance to taste sfincione in all its variations, accompanied by other Sicilian street food specialties, traditional desserts, and wine. The event also features a craft market, cooking shows, and entertainment for the whole family.
The entertainment portion of the festival has always highlighted local artists: various editions have featured local singers and bands, giving the event an authentically popular and community-driven spirit. Amidst the sounds, scents, and colors, the Sfincione Festival is the perfect opportunity to discover Ficarazzi and a piece of the gastronomic culture of the Palermo province, in a convivial atmosphere that draws visitors from the entire region.
The dates for the 2026 edition of the Ficarazzi Sfincione Festival have not yet been announced. Based on recent editions, the event is expected to return on the first weekend of October in the center of Ficarazzi (Palermo), featuring tastings of Ficarazzi-style sfincione, Sicilian street food, a craft market, and live performances. The detailed program will be published by the Pro Loco and the Municipality closer to the event date.
The event takes place in the historic center of Ficarazzi (PA), throughout the town's streets and squares.
By car: Ficarazzi is located along the SS113, a few kilometers east of Palermo; take the Bagheria exit from the A19 Palermo-Catania motorway. By train: Ficarazzi-Acqua dei Corsari station on the Palermo-Messina line. The nearest airport is Palermo Falcone-Borsellino (Punta Raisi).
Access to the festival is free; tastings are paid for at individual stalls.
It is best to arrive in the evening when the center comes alive with stalls and performances. For updated dates and programs, we recommend checking the official channels of the Municipality and the Pro Loco of Ficarazzi.
