In the heart of summer, the small town of Ventimiglia di Sicilia, in the Metropolitan City of Palermo, gathers around one of the most beloved figures of island spirituality: San Calogero, the hermit venerated across Sicily with the affectionate nickname of "Black Saint." The San Calogero Festival, traditionally celebrated around August 18th, is an event that weaves together religious ritual, community identity, and tradition, transforming the village streets into a stage of faith and color.
Devotion to San Calogero has roots spanning centuries and reaches across Sicily, from Agrigento to Sciacca, and from Naro to the towns of the Madonie and the Termini coast. In Ventimiglia di Sicilia, the cult of the hermit—depicted with the dark complexion that earned him the nickname of Black Saint—is deep and vibrant, passed down from generation to generation as an opportunity to express faith, gratitude, and hope within the community.
The most anticipated and solemn moment is the procession of the Saint's statue, which winds through the streets of the historic center accompanied by the prayers of devotees and the marches of the local band. A participatory crowd follows the float with emotion, in an atmosphere that blends spiritual reflection with popular warmth. The Mother Church and the town squares become the focal point for liturgical celebrations and social gatherings.
Alongside the religious dimension, the festival offers the more convivial side of Sicilian village fairs:
Visiting Ventimiglia di Sicilia during the festival also means discovering a town with a fascinating history, founded in the 17th century by the noble Ventimiglia family and home to the Mother Church dedicated to the Most Holy Virgin Mary of the Conception. Nestled in the hills of the province of Palermo, the town welcomes visitors with authentic hospitality and the charm of a religious tradition that finds new life every summer.
