A Sicilian village's living nativity scene blending faith, ancient crafts, and Christmas tradition

The Altavilla Milicia Living Nativity is one of the most cherished Christmas events in Altavilla Milicia, a small seaside village just a few kilometers from Palermo in the heart of Sicily. During the holidays, the Garden of the Sisters Daughters of the Cross on Via Dante transforms into a charming, old-world Bethlehem, where local volunteers recreate the Nativity scenes and the daily life of an ancient village.
The trail is an immersive journey through faith, culture, and folk traditions. Along the set scenes, you will encounter ancient tradesโthe blacksmith, the carpenter, and the artisans of yesteryearโalongside shepherds and the animals that bring the representation to life. Visits are accompanied by the sound of bagpipers, moments of folklore and music, and tastings of typical local products from the Sicilian Christmas tradition. For the little ones, there is also a meeting with Santa Claus.
Promoted by the San Giuseppe Festival Committee with the patronage of the Municipality of Altavilla Milicia, the living nativity is a non-profit project, made possible by the voluntary commitment of citizens, associations, and the parish community. Over the years, it has become an integral part of community life, an eagerly awaited event that emphasizes the values of sharing, peace, and solidarity.
Complementing the living nativity experience is the Artistic Nativity Exhibition, set up near the Sanctuary of the Madonna della Milicia. This exhibition, also free of charge, showcases creative and devotional works made by artisans and enthusiasts, and is usually open throughout the holiday period, from mid-December until Epiphany.
With its free admission and intimate atmosphere, the Altavilla Milicia Living Nativity is an ideal opportunity to immerse yourself in the magic of Christmas and rediscover the beauty of the traditions of the Palermo province in a welcoming, family-friendly setting.
The program and dates for the 2026 edition of the Altavilla Milicia Living Nativity have not yet been published.
