About Altavilla Milicia Living Nativity

During the Christmas season, the village of Altavilla Milicia, near Palermo, transforms into a miniature Bethlehem. In the Garden of the Sisters Daughters of the Cross on Via Dante, performers bring the Nativity and ancient trades to life, accompanied by traditional bagpipers, local food tastings, and Santa Claus for the little ones. This free event, organized by the San Giuseppe Festival Committee, draws families, locals, and tourists every year.

A living nativity in the heart of Sicily

The Altavilla Milicia Living Nativity is one of the most cherished Christmas events in Altavilla Milicia, a small seaside village just a few kilometers from Palermo in the heart of Sicily. During the holidays, the Garden of the Sisters Daughters of the Cross on Via Dante transforms into a charming, old-world Bethlehem, where local volunteers recreate the Nativity scenes and the daily life of an ancient village.

Ancient crafts and old-world atmosphere

The trail is an immersive journey through faith, culture, and folk traditions. Along the set scenes, you will encounter ancient tradesโ€”the blacksmith, the carpenter, and the artisans of yesteryearโ€”alongside shepherds and the animals that bring the representation to life. Visits are accompanied by the sound of bagpipers, moments of folklore and music, and tastings of typical local products from the Sicilian Christmas tradition. For the little ones, there is also a meeting with Santa Claus.

A consolidated tradition

Promoted by the San Giuseppe Festival Committee with the patronage of the Municipality of Altavilla Milicia, the living nativity is a non-profit project, made possible by the voluntary commitment of citizens, associations, and the parish community. Over the years, it has become an integral part of community life, an eagerly awaited event that emphasizes the values of sharing, peace, and solidarity.

The Artistic Nativity Exhibition

Complementing the living nativity experience is the Artistic Nativity Exhibition, set up near the Sanctuary of the Madonna della Milicia. This exhibition, also free of charge, showcases creative and devotional works made by artisans and enthusiasts, and is usually open throughout the holiday period, from mid-December until Epiphany.

An event for the whole family

With its free admission and intimate atmosphere, the Altavilla Milicia Living Nativity is an ideal opportunity to immerse yourself in the magic of Christmas and rediscover the beauty of the traditions of the Palermo province in a welcoming, family-friendly setting.
