The Diospyros Festival is the food and wine event where Misilmeri, a town in the Metropolitan City of Palermo, celebrates its iconic product: the persimmon (also known as kaki or lotus fruit), whose botanical name Diospyros kaki gives the festival its title. The event was born in 2024 from the traditional Persimmon Festival, renewed in name and content, bringing the best of local agricultural and gastronomic production to the town square for three evenings.
The heart of the festival is Piazza Comitato 1860, in the center of Misilmeri, which hosts the stands, cooking show stations, and the street food village. The event takes place between late November and early December, coinciding with the peak ripening of the persimmon, with evenings coming alive from late afternoon until night.
The program revolves around cooking shows by local chefs, pizza makers, pastry chefs, and gelato masters, who reinterpret the persimmon in both sweet and savory recipes. Alongside the demonstrations, there are tastings of innovative persimmon-based dishes and a street food village featuring Sicilian specialties. There is no shortage of stands from producers and local artisans, allowing visitors to discover the fruit's supply chain up close.
The evenings are accompanied by live music, performances, and cabaret, making the Diospyros Festival a festive appointment for families and visitors alike. In addition to entertainment, the festival includes a moment of in-depth study with a technical seminar on the growth prospects of the Misilmeri persimmon, focusing on cultivation, marketing, preservation, and product enhancement.
The cultivation of persimmons in Misilmeri dates back to the late 17th century and has become a defining trait of the town and its countryside over time. The Diospyros Festival was created to strengthen the bond between the community, farmers, and the land, promoting the fruit as a jewel of Sicily. The event is organized by the Municipality of Misilmeri with the support of the Sicilian Region and is included among the events that highlight Sicily as a land of gastronomy.
More than just a local village fair, the Diospyros Festival combines taste, culture, and social life in a weekend that attracts visitors from neighboring towns and the Palermo metropolitan area. Between a tasting and a show, it is the ideal opportunity to get to know Misilmeri, its agricultural tradition, and the authenticity of Sicilian cuisine.
For the 2026 edition of the Diospyros Festival in Misilmeri, no official dates have been released yet. Based on the usual timing of the event, dedicated to the local persimmon, the festival is expected to return between late November and early December in Piazza Comitato 1860. The program featuring cooking shows, tastings, street food, and performances will be announced by the organizers in the weeks leading up to the event.
Misilmeri is located about 18 km from Palermo. By car, it can be reached via the A19 Palermo-Catania motorway (Bagheria exit) or the SS121. Misilmeri is connected to Palermo by suburban bus lines.
The events are concentrated in Piazza Comitato 1860, in the historic center of the town.
Access to the event area and shows is generally free; tastings and street food are paid for at individual stands.
