About Caltanissetta Christmas City

For nearly a month, from the Immaculate Conception to Epiphany, Corso Umberto I and the historic center of Caltanissetta transform into a grand Christmas village. Markets featuring artisans and local products, an ice rink in Piazza Garibaldi, Santa's House, traditional and living nativity scenes, concerts, children's shows, and costumed parades bring the heart of central Sicily to life every evening. An initiative by the Municipality of Caltanissetta with free admission, designed for families, residents, and visitors.

Christmas in the heart of Central Sicily

Every winter, the capital of the Caltanissetta province dons its most glittering attire: Caltanissetta Christmas City turns Corso Umberto I and the entire historic center into a trail of lights, scents, and music that accompanies the city from the Immaculate Conception through to Epiphany. This major Christmas festival, promoted by the Municipality of Caltanissetta, is designed to revitalize the city center and offer families and visitors a packed calendar of events, almost all of which are free to attend.

The markets on Corso Umberto I

The heart of the event is the Christmas Markets: every evening at sunset, the wooden chalets lining Corso Umberto I welcome visitors with a Food Sector dedicated to authentic Sicilian flavors and an Artisan Sector where you can find handmade gifts. Dozens of exhibitors offer sweets, gastronomic specialties, and local crafts, while cascades of star-shaped and comet-shaped lights illuminate the promenade.

Skating, nativity scenes, and Santa's House

Among the most beloved attractions are the ice skating rink set up in Piazza Garibaldi, Santa's House where little ones can drop off their wish lists, and the historic Exhibition of Artisan Nativity Scenes, which reached its twenty-first edition in recent years. There is also no shortage of living nativity scenes in the historic districts and surrounding hamlets, such as Borgo Santa Rita, which highlight the deep religious traditions of Sicily.

Shows, concerts, and tradition

The program weaves together magic shows and bubble performances, themed musicals, Christmas concerts in the city's churches, gospel performances in the Cathedral, folk groups, bagpipers, flag-wavers, and costumed processions. The festival culminates in major New Year's Eve events and the arrival of the Befana on January 6th, blending contemporary fun with the popular traditions of Sicily.

A city rediscovered

More than just a series of events, Caltanissetta Christmas City is an opportunity to rediscover the historic center of the capital, support local businesses, and experience the festive spirit in a city often off the beaten path of mass tourism. An authentically Sicilian Christmas, just a stone's throw from the sulfur mines that shaped the city's history and the famous Real Maestranza ritual.
