The great Marian celebration in Canicattì, blending faith, tradition, and muffuletti

The Feast of the Immaculate Conception is one of the most deeply felt celebrations in Canicattì, a city in the Province of Agrigento, in the heart of Sicily. The cult of the Immaculate, introduced to the island during the Norman era, spread widely following the solemn vow made by the city of Palermo in 1624 as thanksgiving for deliverance from the plague. Canicattì embraced this devotion, which still today animates the Sanctuary of the Immaculate, cared for by the San Francesco Parish.
The festivities unfold over an intense nine-day preparation period, culminating on December 8th, the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception. Each day is marked by moments of prayer: the Holy Rosary and the Salve Regina in the early morning, Holy Masses, the meditated Rosary, the Angelus, and traditional afternoon hymns. The novena also features thematic days dedicated to children and life, the poor, the sick, the youth, priests, and families in difficulty, including acts of solidarity such as food drives.
The highlight is December 8th. In the morning, a blank shot announces the feast; at 10:00 AM, the statue of the Immaculate gathers in Piazza Roma, followed at 11:30 AM by the solemn Holy Mass attended by civil and military authorities. At noon, the statue is carried in procession through the city's main streets, accompanied by the faithful, while the closing Mass is celebrated in the late afternoon. The day concludes with fireworks and musical entertainment.
The religious dimension intertwines with popular and culinary customs. December 7th, the eve of the feast, was traditionally a day of fasting, but it was and still is a time to enjoy the famous 'nciminati muffuletti, soft breads seasoned with oil, anchovies, fish in oil, or ricotta. This custom, which continues in the homes and squares of Canicattì, represents one of the most authentic links between faith and the culture of the Agrigento territory.
The Feast of the Immaculate in Canicattì is not just a religious anniversary but an authentic piece of the city's identity, passed down from generation to generation. Amidst the fervor of the novena, the solemnity of the procession, and the warmth of popular traditions, December 8th renews the deep bond between the community and its celestial patroness every year.
The celebrations are centered at the Sanctuary of the Immaculate, within the San Francesco Parish, and along the streets of the center of Canicattì (Province of Agrigento). The procession on December 8th departs from Piazza Roma and travels through the main city streets.
Canicattì is well-connected: by car via the SS640 Agrigento-Caltanissetta; by train, the city is served by the Canicattì station, an important railway hub in south-central Sicily. Reference airports: Catania-Fontanarossa and Palermo-Punta Raisi.
Participation in religious celebrations and public events in the square is free of charge.
