The grand moving nativity scene of the Madonie, a masterpiece of art and craftsmanship

The Artistic Mechanical Nativity Scene of Blufi is one of the most admired nativity displays in Sicily and, according to the organizers, one of the largest mechanical nativity scenes in Italy. Set up in the small town of Blufi, in the province of Palermo, within the Madonie region, the exhibition occupies the rectory on Via Indipendenzaโa space of over 80 square meters granted by the Diocese of Cefalรน and transformed every winter into an entire miniature village.
What makes this nativity scene extraordinary is the movement: over seventy figurines, animated by hidden mechanisms, recreate the ancient trades and daily life of a bygone Madonie village. Amidst a maze of alleys, stairways, and small squares, bakers, shepherds, craftsmen, and farmers come to life, while light and sound effects guide the visitor through a journey that weaves together the spirituality of Christmas with the memory of Sicilian folk traditions.
Alongside the main scene, the exhibition features a series of Christmas dioramas: seven miniature displays, with figures standing twelve to fifteen centimeters tall, narrating the main episodes of the Gospel, from the Annunciation and Joseph's dream to the Flight into Egypt. A new illuminated gallery welcomes visitors into the Christmas atmosphere, a testament to the continuous scenographic research that characterizes each edition.
The nativity scene was born in 2010 from the passion of a group of local youths and is now managed by the Young Event Art (YEA) association, which brings together about thirty young people from Blufi aged between sixteen and thirty. Their volunteer work, involving months of preparation, has transformed a local initiative into a true tourist attraction: the last edition exceeded three thousand visitors, helping to enliven the village and promote the heritage of the Madonie during the holiday season.
A visit to the nativity scene is part of a broader Christmas program in the town of Blufi, featuring music, charity events, and activities for all ages. It is a perfect opportunity to discover an authentic village in the Sicilian hinterland and experience Christmas away from the most crowded circuits, immersed in the scents and traditions of the Madonie.
The Artistic Mechanical Nativity Scene of Blufi has been an annual Christmas tradition since 2010 and, according to the organizers, it will return for Christmas 2026. At the moment, the exact dates and program have not yet been published: historically, the display opens around the Feast of the Immaculate Conception in early December and remains open until January 6th. To find out about hours, tickets, and news for the 2026 edition, please follow the official channels of the Young Event Art association.
The nativity scene is set up in the rectory at Via Indipendenza 23, in the historic center of Blufi (PA), in the heart of the Madonie.
By car, Blufi can be reached via the A19 Palermo-Catania motorway (Tremonzelli exit) or the SS120 road that crosses the Madonie. The nearest train station is Roccapalumba-Alia, about a half-hour drive away.
In recent editions, the display was open daily from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM, with additional morning hours from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM on holidays. The ticket price was 2 euros for adults, with free admission for children and teenagers. It is recommended to check updated hours and prices before visiting.
