In the heart of the South Tyrolean Lowlands, the municipality of Tramin an der Weinstraße (in Italian Termeno sulla strada del vino), in the province of Bolzano, celebrates the solemnity of Corpus Christi (known locally as Fronleichnam) as one of the most significant religious and cultural highlights of the year. It is a celebration that unites the devotion of the South Tyrolean community with its deep-rooted folk traditions in a village world-renowned for its Gewürztraminer wine.

The traditional procession

Following the celebration of Holy Mass in the parish church, the solemn Corpus Christi procession begins, winding through the village streets adorned with greenery, flowers, and religious symbols. The parade is accompanied by traditional local associations marching in historical costumes:

• the Schützen (the historical South Tyrolean marksmen company);
• the Volunteer Fire Brigade (Freiwillige Feuerwehr);
• the Bürgerkapelle Tramin, the local civic brass band, providing sacred music;
• the Volkstanzgruppe, the folk dance group, carrying the statue of the Virgin Mary through the village.

The participation in Tracht (traditional Tyrolean costume) and the richness of the decorations make the procession one of the most evocative events in the Tramin calendar, where faith and local identity intertwine.

The Frühschoppen on the church square

At the end of the procession, the Südtiroler Bauernbund Tramin (the South Tyrolean Farmers' Union) invites the entire community and visitors to the traditional Frühschoppen on the church square (Kirchhof): a convivial gathering featuring good company, local culinary specialties, regional wine, and a festive atmosphere. It is the perfect opportunity to spend the morning together after the religious service, in the true spirit of South Tyrolean community life.
