The village festival of Colterenzio on the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross
Every year on September 14th, the small hamlet of Colterenzio (known in German as Schreckbichl) celebrates its parish festival, the traditional South Tyrolean Kirchtag. The event coincides with the feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, the patron of the village church, and is one of the most cherished moments of the year for this community nestled among the vineyards above Appiano sulla strada del vino, in South Tyrol.
The village community cordially invites residents and visitors to experience this festive day in a genuine and intimate atmosphere, celebrating local customs. As tradition dictates, the day begins with a religious service in honor of the Holy Cross, followed by the social festivities: internal courtyards and ancient farm cellars open their doors to welcome guests, while local associations bring the festival to life.
The festival is also an opportunity to savor the authentic flavors of South Tyrol. You will find traditional Giggerle (grilled chicken) and typical local specialties, accompanied by regional wines: Colterenzio is, in fact, one of the most famous names in South Tyrolean viticulture, where in 1960 some local winegrowers founded the renowned cooperative winery that bears the hamlet's name.
The parish festival is traditionally linked to the concert by the Musikkapelle Girlan, the brass band from nearby Cornaiano, which accompanies the event with the typical Kirchtagskonzert. Folk music and traditional costumes complete the atmosphere of an authentic alpine village festival.
Colterenzio is located in the municipality of Appiano sulla strada del vino, one of the most prominent wine-growing areas in the autonomous province of Bolzano. The parish festival thus offers visitors the chance to discover an authentic corner of South Tyrol, where farming traditions, wine culture, and community life still intertwine just as they did in the past.
The Colterenzio parish festival returns on September 14, 2026, in the hamlet of Schreckbichl, above Appiano sulla strada del vino. As per tradition, the day combines the service in honor of the Holy Cross with social festivities, including the opening of farm courtyards and ancient cellars, traditional Giggerle, and South Tyrolean specialties. The event is traditionally accompanied by the concert of the Musikkapelle Girlan. The full schedule for the 2026 edition will be released by the organizers closer to the event.
