The autumn transhumance and rural festival at the Kirchplatz in Trodena
The Trudner Almabtrieb — also known as the Desmontegada — is the event that marks the end of the summer grazing season in Trodena nel parco naturale / Truden im Naturpark, a small German-speaking municipality in the Autonomous Province of Bolzano, nestled in Southern South Tyrol at the foot of the Corno di Tramin within the Monte Corno Nature Park. As in many mountain communities in Trentino-Alto Adige, the end of summer coincides with the return of the herds from the high pastures: a deeply felt event that weaves together rural labor, faith, and village celebration.
The heart of the event is the parade of elaborately decorated animals. Cows, horses, and goats are adorned with flowers, conifer branches, colorful ribbons, and large cowbells. Led by the farmers of Trodena, they process to the Kirchplatz, the church square in the village center. This decoration is not merely ornamental; according to Alpine tradition, it signifies that the summer grazing season has concluded without accidents or losses, serving as a gesture of thanksgiving.
The livestock descent is accompanied by a vibrant folk festival. The day begins with the arrival of brass bands and the traditional Frühschoppen, a morning aperitif in the square. This is followed by a grand procession featuring Goaßlschnöller (whip-crackers) and Schuhplattler groups, who perform the characteristic Tyrolean dance. The event also features local choirs, band concerts, and musical entertainment that continues throughout the afternoon and evening. For Speis und Trank — food and drink — everything is organized by the stands managed by the Wikinger Trodena, the association that oversees the event.
The Trudner Almabtrieb is a day designed for all ages, offering a chance to discover the rural soul of South Tyrol up close: admire the animals, enjoy traditional costumes, taste local dishes, and soak in the convivial atmosphere of a mountain village festival. Trodena is easily accessible from the Bassa Atesina and Val di Fiemme, and serves as an ideal starting point for hikes in the Monte Corno Nature Park.
