About Fire Rituals - 'Ntosse

In Santo Stefano, a small hamlet in the municipality of Sante Marie in the province of L'Aquila, the Christmas season is marked by the ancient fire ritual known as 'ntosse. In the late afternoon, following vespers, a large bonfire called "la capanna" is lit on the hill overlooking the village, while burning torches illuminate the narrow streets. This Marsican tradition, recovered after decades of neglect, is now a candidate for UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage alongside other fire rituals of Abruzzo and Molise.

An ancient fire ritual in the heart of Marsica

In the hamlet of Santo Stefano, a tiny village in the Municipality of Sante Marie, in the province of L'Aquila, Christmas literally ignites with the 'ntosse. The local dialect term is an adjective meaning "lit" or "set on fire," referring to the blazing torches that bring the village to life on the longest night of winter. It is one of many fire rituals that define the Apennine hinterland of Abruzzo, a heritage of gestures and symbols passed down from generation to generation.

The "capanna" and the torches

The ritual unfolds in two stages. In the late afternoon, after vespers, a first large fire called "la capanna" (the hut) is lit on the hill overlooking the town: a structure made of four large logs filled with branches and brushwood, reminiscent of the manger in Bethlehem. According to tradition, the direction of the smoke at the moment of ignition holds prophetic value: smoke drifting South is a good omen, while Northward smoke foretells a harsh winter. Shortly before midnight, a procession of torches, crafted from oak wood and bundles of dry broom, winds through the village streets.

A recovered tradition

Interrupted for several decades, the 'ntosse tradition has been restored by the community and now draws significant participation. In a village of just over a hundred inhabitants struggling with the depopulation of inland areas, the fire ritual has become a powerful tool for identity and cultural revitalization, successfully bringing families and visitors back into the square.

A ritual that unites territories

The 'ntosse of Santo Stefano are part of a wider network of Apennine fire rituals. Delegations from the Marsican village join those from Collelongo at the Festival of Ritual Fires in Agnone, Molise, home of the famous 'Ndocciata. The initiative aims for an ambitious goal: the recognition of these fire rituals as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, involving dozens of Italian municipalities and numerous associations.

When it takes place

The Christmas 'ntosse are celebrated during the holiday season, traditionally around December 20th and on Christmas Eve. The event is part of the "Natale a... Sante Marie" program, promoted by the municipal administration in collaboration with local associations and the community.
