Music, dance, and folk traditions from around the world in Tagliacozzo
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The International Folklore Festival is one of the most anticipated and long-standing events of the summer in Tagliacozzo, a town in the Marsica area of L'Aquila province, in the heart of Abruzzo. Every year, the historic center comes alive with costumes, songs, dances, and folk traditions from every corner of the globe: over the years, groups from Africa, Oceania, the Americas, and Europe have performed alongside ensembles from various Italian regions. The result is a fascinating "journey around the world" that, for two evenings, transforms the square into an intercultural stage.
The event has been organized since 1979 by the "Luigi Venturini" Choir of Tagliacozzo, a historic choral association dedicated to the protection and promotion of folk culture. Born as a showcase for musical and choreographic traditions, the Festival has grown over the years to become an international event capable of attracting folk groups from multiple continents. The event is sponsored by the Municipality of Tagliacozzo, the Abruzzo Region, and industry federations, and is supported by numerous local associations and organizations.
The natural stage for the Festival is the scenic Piazza Duca degli Abruzzi, framed by the medieval village of Tagliacozzo, one of the most beautiful in Abruzzo. During the evenings, usually starting at nightfall, the groups perform their traditional repertoires, featuring costume parades, dances, and choral pieces that tell stories of field work, shepherding, festivals, and the rituals of their home communities.
The International Folklore Festival offers free admission and is aimed at audiences of all ages: families, folk tradition enthusiasts, and tourists choosing the Marsica area for their summer holidays. Beyond the performances, the event is an opportunity to discover Tagliacozzo, its historic center, and the hospitality of a community that has made folklore a bridge between peoples for over forty years.
The dates and program for the 2026 edition have not yet been officially announced. The event is traditionally held in the summer, between late July and August: it is advisable to check for updates on the channels of the Municipality of Tagliacozzo and the "Luigi Venturini" Choir in the weeks leading up to the event.
